You choose nonmagical flame that you can see within range and that fits within a 5-foot cube. You affect it in one of the following ways:
- You instantaneously expand the flame 5 feet in one direction, provided that wood or other fuel is present in the new location.
- You instantaneously extinguish the flames within the cube.
- You double or halve the area of bright light and dim light cast by the flame, change its color, or both. The change lasts for 1 hour.
- You cause simple shapes—such as the vague form of a creature, an inanimate object, or a location—to appear within the flames and animate as you like. The shapes last for 1 hour.
If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have up to three of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as an action.
So, presuming that a torch cast bright light in a 20-foot radius circle (rather than a sphere), with this I can reduce it to a 14-foot radius circle or expand it to a 28-foot radius circle? Gotcha. A bit underwhelming but ok.
I wish this spell would instead double or halve the radius, it would make the math so much easier.
Not by itself. It is only a cantrip and you shouldn‘t be expecting any damage or combat bonus from it. That being said, as a DM, if there is flammable materials around, i would allow to set them on fire and grant 1d6 fire damage when you start your turn in the fire, or the first time you enter the area.
I googled this question just to find if anyone else had a problem with the wording on this and found you :D
I think at my table I'd rule it'd double the radius. I find it easier to assume that game designers flunked math than to think they intentionally took a game of 5 foot squares and expect you to multiply by the square root of two, especially since they ruled diagonal distance is equivalent to normal distance, making all circles project onto cubes when mapped.
If this dealt any type of damage from it spreading 5 Feet, it would be likely the same as the bonfire spell (DC13 dex) 1d8 fire damage
It would likely be something like bonfire if you spread it into a 5foot Sqr with a creature inside. Most likely, they would make a DEX save vs your spell save dc
Should be on the artificer spell list
burned down an animated rug with this, just threw my torch next to it and spread the fire into its space on a wooden floor.
DM ruled one D6 at the start of its turn, for every tile it is occupying that is burning.
This spell is insanely useful, to say the least. Wanna give someone advantage on basically any charisma check by forming simple shapes as they're talking? Done. Wanna act like a fortune teller? Just light up a candle and "if the flame goes out, you will die within the next year, and if it glows brighter, you will become rich within the next year," and make up the outcome. You could further this by saying "I will use strong divination magic to change this outcome, for a price," and bam, you just earned yourself some money. Don't like how dim it is in a cave? You can practically cast Daylight now, so long as flames are around.. Or, if you're facing off against someone and you know they don't have darkvision, you could snuff their torch, or for intimidation purposes, dim it to just 10 feet bright and 10 feet dim. See a light source near a person you don't like? You could turn the flame red and make it form strange obscure monstrous faces, and make it super bright or dim, all in the span of about 18 seconds.
You're only affecting the already existing flame with magic, you're not creating it, so I'd do the same damage as a regular fire hazard, whatever that may be. In other words, I wouldn't do anything special with it, because you can only brighten the flame or expand it to another source of fuel, not enhance the flame itself.
RAW no but as someone who loves spell combos i would definetly allow it. I love the idea of casting produce flame then controll flame to animate it and then minor illusion speech on top to basically portray anything you like as a little hand held hologram projector
when it comes to shapes in the fire, "animate as you like" could that apply to any lifelike features like sounds or even speech? or just movement?
Could you use control flames to control a fire elemental?
I'd let you cut 5ft of range off a line of the fire, or cut a 5foot square out of the edge of the cone. If you have the spell held pending the fire breath, I'd let you cut the fire out of your square, for slightly reduced damage (maybe 1d4 less damage) Not because RAW supports this (It definitely does not) but because it would be so cinematically cool.
If I was DM-ing I would say that it only suppresses the fire in the cube, and it would appear on the other side, maybe with reduced damage like @Gehennaheretic suggested. However, I would allow you to hold this spell with the Ready action so you could create a protective field of anti-fire around you. This wouldn't be too powerful, since any spellcaster who is fighting a red dragon certainly has more effective spells to cast at the dragon, and they are essentially trading a round of attacking the dragon to have a chance at not dying. Also, it's cool.
Edit: It's just occured to me that there aren't really any spells in D&D that block area effects like dragon's breath. Shield doesn't do anything against it and the closest thing I can think of is trapping yourself in a forcecage.
In theory I think that could work and if u role high enough u might even be able to use the dragons flames against itself
If only NPCs had windows and used candles to light their homes. *Hint Hint*
So.... I read a comment somewhere else regarding this spell, and they said they'll controll flames from a torch to move it onto people's clothing.
Now I wonder, is this just an isanely good idea to set people on fire, since cotton and linen are flammable, or is it just not possible as it's not a proper fuel.
Great to grab through a feat or dip for a Gloom Stalker to extinguish enemy torches.
Can I add the ability to stop flames from burning things but keep them lit? That will be doooope. I need it right now to keep the flames burning on my VTT while not destroying anymore of the buildings I tirelessly created.
To whom it may concern, this spell is not very specific and leaves much room for creativity. I highly recommend speaking to your DM about possible uses that you think of.
P.S. Sorry about any spelling mistakes.
