Radiant
Guided by a flash of magical insight, you make one attack with the weapon used in the spell’s casting. The attack uses your spellcasting ability for the attack and damage rolls instead of using Strength or Dexterity. If the attack deals damage, it can be Radiant damage or the weapon’s normal damage type (your choice).
Cantrip Upgrade. Whether you deal Radiant damage or the weapon’s normal damage type, the attack deals extra Radiant damage when you reach levels 5 (1d6), 11 (2d6), and 17 (3d6).
* - (a weapon with which you have proficiency and that is worth 1+ CP)

Posted Nov 29, 2025Has there been a change to this spell? There is a new category listed for spells, Attack/Save, that lists the spell as Melee.

Posted Dec 1, 2025There hasn't been any change to this spell since its initial release in 2024.
The "Attack/Save" header at the top is part of D&D Beyond's compendium page, not part of the actual description of the spell. It has always been there, and it has always said "Melee", even though that's incorrect. This has been reported as a bug a few times but they haven't done anything with it yet.
This spell can be used with any weapon that the caster is proficient with and that is worth at least 1 cp, including both melee and ranged weapons. Remember that it's the description of the spell that defines what it can do and how it can be used, not D&D Beyond's metadata.

Posted Dec 19, 2025Shillelagh plus True Strike at level 17 is doing 2d6 plus 3d6 plus 5 (assuming maxed casting stat) radiant damage. That's not a lot of damage, at level 17, but it's not bad for hitting people who don't understand personal boundaries.

Posted Dec 22, 2025The RAW here is a little murky, largely because Magic Stone is an older spell that's not worded particularly well.
However, I don't think using them together would provide much benefit over just using this spell on its own. The damage is slightly higher than using True Strike with a normal sling (1d6 vs. 1d4) but the only other benefit Magic Stone provides is letting you use your spellcasting ability modifier for the attack and damage rolls, which True Strike already does anyway. Using True Strike with a shortbow provides the same exact attack and damage rolls and a much longer range, without having to learn two different cantrips and use a bonus action to cast the other one first.
I think the only time the combo would be helpful is if for some reason you had access to rocks, but not to a proper ranged weapon. This seems like too rare a situation to be worth taking Magic Stone for, especially when you could just solve that problem by taking another cantrip that just does damage on its own.

Posted Dec 31, 2025It kind of is - the spell from the word Go was meant to make spellcasters more accurate with their weapon attacks, and this does it in a somewhat roundabout way by affixing your spellcasting stat to what you use to attack with the weapon.
