You choose a magical or nonmagical flame that you can see within range and that fits within a 5-foot cube. You affect it in one of the following ways:
-
You instantaneously expand the flame 5 feet in one direction, provided that wood or other fuel is present in the new location.
-
You cause tendrils of fire to instantaneously burst from the flame in all directions. Each creature within 5 feet of the flame must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d6 fire damage. This spell’s damage increases by 1d6 when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6).
-
You instantaneously extinguish any nonmagical flames within the cube.
-
You double or halve the area of bright light and dim light cast by the flame, change its color, or both. The change lasts for 1 hour.
-
You cause simple shapes—such as the vague form of a creature, an inanimate object, or a location—to appear within the flames and animate as you like. The shapes last for 1 hour.
If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have up to four of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as a bonus action.
Author Notes
This spell is utilised in my homebrew Firebender subclass, which forms part of my Element Bender monk subclass series. It is also used in my homebrew Genie Soul sorcerer subclass.
The improvements versus the baseline control flames cantrip are:
New ability: Can be used as a spell attack, targeting creatures in range and inflicting fire damage on a failed Dexterity save.
Improved ability: You can choose to target a magical flame instead of a nonmagical flame, for all effects except for extinguishing the flame.
Improved ability: You can maintain four (instead of three) of its non-instantaneous effects at a time, and can dismiss such an effect with a bonus action (instead of an action).
