By inscribing a rune onto a solid surface, you can plant an arcane "bug" that can hear anything in the room it's planted in, provided whoever is speaking isn't under the effects of illusion magic. While the rune created by the spell does "listen" to everything said, it does not store any information about things said in its vicinity. When you cast the spell, you can ascribe up to five words or phrases for the spell to listen for. If any of the ascribed words or phrases is said, the caster is notified by having the word or phrase echo in their mind.
It is possible to have multiple Arcane Ears live at one time in multiple locations, but they must all be on the same Plane of existence. A powerful, secretive organization could have many of them planted in taverns and inns around the world to keep tabs on certain forbidden words, or code phrases meant to signal each other. A clever caster can actually change the voice they hear when an Arcane Ear is triggered depending on where they place the spell.

Posted Jun 23, 2021Do you know at which arcane ear the phrase has been said,
or do you just hear it but don't know which of the ears told you?

Posted Oct 1, 2022An interesting possible addition to this spell would be the ability to link this with a Magic mouth, so the magic mouth would then act only to speak what the Arcane Ear hears.
