You create a bonfire on ground that you can see within range. Until the spell ends, the magic bonfire fills a 5-foot cube. Any creature in the bonfire’s space when you cast the spell must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d8 fire damage. A creature must also make the saving throw when it moves into the bonfire’s space for the first time on a turn or ends its turn there.
The bonfire ignites flammable objects in its area that aren’t being worn or carried.
The spell’s damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).
Does not emit light.
Creates a bonfire. Bonfire emits light.
im noticing it doesn't specify that it creates light
Just realized, This Spell is Invisible. Other Spells specify whether they produce Bright or dim light this says neither.
This Spell being concentration makes A LOT more sense now if that's the case for Invisible Fire.
So on the visible flames thing... Lots of things burn with no visible flames (and cause nightmares for fire fighting) eg: Ethanol fires which have no visible flames *but* are very hot. An Ethanol fire easily ignites other flammable objects (often only clue) and radiates enough heat to ignite nearby objects.
It is a bit off from how it is written in the description but in one of my campaigns I gave this cantrip to the NPCs working in a glassblowing factory for heating the kilns. It gave an immersive touch to the world that you could be a poor "wizard" that spent 8 hours a day on the dirty factory floor just milling out Bonfires. It was appreciated and gave a nice element to the eventual combat in the facility :)
In combat I love this spell as it gives a Roy Mustang-feel to a caster :D
Its only out of combat use is to ignite other flammable objects. So if you've gathered firewood but have no means of lighting it, you can use this to create an actual bonfire with your magical bonfire.
Bro. Just recast it. It's a cantrip! XD
Considering the lack of material component for this cantrip? Not raw. Ask your dm instead!
There is absolutely a reason why you couldn't do this. It fills a 5 foot cube. If that cube is at the center of 4 grid squares, then the enemies in those grid squares still have 3/4 of their grid square to move around. Goblins don't completely fill a 5ft square, meaning that a goblin could easily move to the opposite corner of its grid and dodge the effect completely.
For thinking creatively, a DM might reward you with getting 2 out of the 4 with the spell, but thinking you could hit 4 enemies in a 10x10 square with a 5x5 attack shouldn't fly.
Could you cast this on your turn, right over the monster.
Then monster moves out of the space (because why wouldn't he)
Then next turn, drop concentration, recast the same thing, right on top of monster's new position. Effectively following the monster as your allies pummel it to death.
Just checking. Description doesn't say you can end it anytime you want, or move it, or whatever. But the Concentration requirement means you could technically.... stop concentrating. Or even just Cast it again next turn, but in a different position.
Thoughts?
I am a DM, and I am slowly learning to hate this Cantrip!
That seems to be the intended use, yes. Concentration is the tax for the persistent effect, just like any other spell that requires concentration. So no Create Bonfire plus Entangle, Web, etc. But Firebolt plus Entangle is okay. Basically, it's a good spell to cast if you don't need to concentrate on anything else, but most other spells that require concentration are way better than this thing and completely kill the use for this.
dont think so
