Choose one object weighing 1 to 5 pounds within range that isn’t being worn or carried. The object flies in a straight line up to 90 feet in a direction you choose before falling to the ground, stopping early if it impacts against a solid surface. If the object would strike a creature, that creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the object strikes the target and stops moving. When the object strikes something, the object and what it strikes each take 3d8 bludgeoning damage.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the maximum weight of objects that you can target with this spell increases by 5 pounds, and the damage increases by 1d8, for each slot level above 1st.
So I’m pretty new to dnd and I have only just started a campaign. But my friends and I were at a big steep mountain with a cave that had a river flowing out of it. We were being am bushed by two goblins and they were in a bunch of trees on the other side of the river. So I decided to use my catapult spell to attack one of the goblins with a stone. To do this I had to roll 1d20 and I had to roll above 17 just two attack it. I rolled a nat 20 which meant I hit him with double damage. Upon Rolling my 3d8’s I got two 7’s and a 6 which makes 20 and with my nat 20 I managed to deal 40 damage. The goblin had only 7hp so my DM describes the attack by saying, “the rock flew through the tree and hit the goblin with a crunch. Upon inspecting the goblin, I had actually blown its head of and all that was left was its body.
A lot of players might be put off by the "Save or Suck" nature of this spell, but I have to say something to people who might be on the fence about this spell. This spell is pretty awesome. I just created a new wizard and decided to try this spell out. Insert classic tavern hijinks, guards get called, we barricaded ourselves inside. Soldiers decided we were too much trouble and threw their torches inside through the windows, my new wizard, seeing an opportunity to try out the new spell he just mastered points at one of the torches next to the barrel of vodka. The torches flies right back out the window and the soldier outside the window takes the torch to the face, he falls down, dead as can be, and set the bush he waded through on fire. This caused the fire to spread to other bushes, which spread to other buildings, then eventually the forest. End of our first actual combat and Session One we had accidentally burned down half of the town, and a large portion of forest. Never been to a table filled with that much laughter and facepalms in my life!
TLDR; Soldiers try to smoke us out of the tavern, literally, end up burning down half the forest and town because smarty-pants wizard used catapult instead of a firebolt.
yea but with chromatic orb... you pay 50 gold per cast?
does anyone know what resource i need to add this too a character? it is not listed in xanathar's which is where the physical card is from. Nor can i buy the eepc on the marketplace
Save or suck is OK with this spell, if you line up enough targets you get a higher chance to hit someone, and a Rogue can't use Uncanny Dodge or Evasion on it. It only does about 3 more hit points than a Magic Missile, but if you casually drop an Acid Flask nearby and launch it, it should also shatter on impact for an extra 2d6...
Rogues can use uncanny dodge on anything that they can see coming form the attacker. Even when they are grappled.
WHY IS THIS A FIRST LEVEL SPELL?
POWERWORD KILL<Catapult
Catapults are inferior to trebuchets.
I heat up, cant com down
Chromatic orb does not consume the diamond on cast. It's one 50-gold diamond, and infinite uses out of it.
Trebuchets are a type of catapult. Other types include Ballista, and Mangonels (usually what people think of when they hear the noun "catapult")
is the shotgun additional piercing damage?
Malcoda, is the shotgun idea additional piercing damage?
i think everyone is overlooking you can upcast this and throw portable rams at people 9d8 maybe not worth the 7th lvl spell slot but sounds fun.
second thought from my mind if i drop and object and then catapult it down do i add falling damage with the normal damage
last thought if i catapult an object someone is standing on and they happen to be small enough would they take 90 feet of fall damage
Sometimes the DM can rule otherwise. For instant my sorcerer often uses his crossbow bolts as ammo for catapult. He once rulled that i killed the thing i hit and it continued and hit the next creature for the damage left
its not the best spell, but i still love it because it reminds me of the gravity gun from half life.

Bonk
what if you lunch an arrow and quick spell you could hit almost any target regardless of cover. have it fly over their heads then use the spell to send it down. depending on if the dm lets you of course. but this means arrows that turn corners. scarry
Fling pound cakes
It's annoying that the spell specifically says object because it ruins an idea I wanted to implement in combat
I guess I'll have to go with original iteration of the plan where one of the beefier party members just throws me at someone.
