Choose one creature or nonmagical object that you can see within range. You transform the creature into a different creature, the creature into a nonmagical object, or the object into a creature (the object must be neither worn nor carried by another creature). The spell lasts for the duration, or until the target drops to 0 hit points or dies. If you concentrate on this spell for the full duration, the spell lasts until it is dispelled.
This spell has no effect on a shapechanger or a creature with 0 hit points. An unwilling creature can make a Wisdom saving throw, and if it succeeds, it isn’t affected by this spell.
Creature into Creature. If you turn a creature into another kind of creature, the new form can be any kind you choose whose challenge rating is equal to or less than the target’s (or its level, if the target doesn’t have a challenge rating). The target’s game statistics, including mental ability scores, are replaced by the statistics of the new form. It retains its alignment and personality.
The target assumes the hit points of its new form, and when it reverts to its normal form, the creature returns to the number of hit points it had before it transformed. If it reverts as a result of dropping to 0 hit points, any excess damage carries over to its normal form. As long as the excess damage doesn’t reduce the creature’s normal form to 0 hit points, it isn’t knocked unconscious.
The creature is limited in the actions it can perform by the nature of its new form, and it can’t speak, cast spells, or take any other action that requires hands or speech, unless its new form is capable of such actions.
The target’s gear melds into the new form. The creature can’t activate, use, wield, or otherwise benefit from any of its equipment.
Object into Creature. You can turn an object into any kind of creature, as long as the creature’s size is no larger than the object’s size and the creature’s challenge rating is 9 or lower. The creature is friendly to you and your companions. It acts on each of your turns. You decide what action it takes and how it moves. The GM has the creature’s statistics and resolves all of its actions and movement.
If the spell becomes permanent, you no longer control the creature. It might remain friendly to you, depending on how you have treated it.
Creature into Object. If you turn a creature into an object, it transforms along with whatever it is wearing and carrying into that form, as long as the object’s size is no larger than the creature’s size. The creature’s statistics become those of the object, and the creature has no memory of time spent in this form, after the spell ends and it returns to its normal form.

The change shape doesn't turn you into a human, it just makes you look like one. That doesn't stop you from becoming a lvl 20 wizard dragon though
The whole "Turn myself into a dragon and ably polymorph between forms to retain class levels" thing has one simple flaw: you turn into a different creature, and thus cease to be what you were before. If you used any impermanent method of turning back, you would only seem to be what you were, but you do not become them. The Change Shape trait doesn't make you become a different creature, rather look like it. But, one who is a spellcaster and turns into a dragon might have the Dragon Innate Spellcasting trait, as the DM sees fit. You would just have the different dragon version of spellcasting, with the advantage that spells like Resurrection don't cost you material components (due to the fact that it is Innate Spellcasting).
change a boat into a hydra! A wagon into a fire giant! A treasure chest into a mimic!
True polymorph Big Rock into Big Roc, then true Polymorph Big Roc into Big Shiny Rock?
When I finally get this spell I'm probably going to use it to turn my enemies into spell components. If you're evil you can just go to a small village and turn some commoners into those gems you need for Symbol or whatever else you plan on casting. If you're not evil then use this as a method of executing your enemies (typically evil creatures).
Okay. Dumb question, but the spell wording didn't specify this. You can use this spell to turn a creature into an object...any object. So, theoretically, could you turn a horse into something like a Holy Avenger? Obviously you can't get this spell until 17th level, but still...that seems like a very powerful exploit.
So, here's what I want to do with this spell:
Turn a powerful creature into a small object (say a small cube), concentrating for the full hour, then dispelling the True Polymorph on the cube when I'm outnumbered to use as a distraction so I can flee. Here's my question; can I simply dispel the True Polymorph as an action (like in Magic Jar), or do I need a spell to dispel the polymorph?
Based on these two statements I would guess no. Your statistics are equal to the sheet of what ever creature you are changed into. Even if the new form is able to cast spells, you lose all features and abilities of your given class because your stats are "replaced" by the monster sheet.

Go Androsphinx. Immune to non- magical weapons (so, so many monsters- even dragons- do non-magical weapon damage) and you can cast Dispel Magic on yourself if/when you want to change back. Have to roll a 15 or more, but you can keep trying till you succeed.
I would rule you need a dispel magic ( spellcasting dc check 19 or more) or similar magic/ ability. Nothing in the spell text gives you any special control to dispel the effect, the way Magic Jar does.
Unless I’m missing something, you could use this to turn yourself into yourself to essentially double your hitpoints and make all your class resources (except for that lvl 9 slot) recharge when you hit half health. Granted it’s not exactly the most exciting use, but it could be a fun twist to add to the bbeg, especially if it causes them to change classes mid fight, like an evil matryoshka doll.
So I have a character that is a necromancer. he is an awakened undead (homebrew) who wants nothing more than to be alive again.
what I have gathered from this spell is that he no longer has to save up a shit ton of money and risk his life trying to get a cleric to cast true resurrection on him, and can instead just find a nice quiet spot for an hour, and BAM instant life.
this is wonderful! wonder how the rest of the party will react when he shows up with brown hair and an actual healthy skin tone lmao
not to mention his sudden mood shift XD
I have no idea if a Druid counts as a shapechanger. If yes, they can't be polymorphed. But even if the Druid polymorphes into a deer: a deer hat INT 2. I would not call that intelligent. The deer is not a Druid. It's just a normal deer. Polymorph more or less swaps your character sheet with the stat block of another entity.
The int of your Druid would drop to the Int of the selected form (in this case, a deer).
However, your Druid already has a better method of turning into a Deer: Wild Shape. Using that, the druid would keep his Int score instead of having it replaced by the int of his chosen form. You only need to become an Archdruid (level 20) in order to make the Wild Shape form permanent.

Can you do legendary actions if the creature's stat block has them?
No
When you cast this on the BBEG
Simple. Take off your equipment. Use the spell. Put the equipment back on. Boom. Benefit from equipment.
Only into a gold dragon who's challenge rating is equal to or lower than yours. Read the spell more closely. :)
