Their connection to shadows makes them effective scouts and guides, using their keen senses to navigate darkness and detect hidden dangers.
Monks who follow the Way of the Shadow are often aloof and enigmatic. They possess a calm and focused demeanor, speaking sparingly and rarely revealing their true motivations. These monks value balance and understand the necessity of both light and darkness. They seek to maintain equilibrium, protecting the innocent and upholding justice while embracing the inherent mysteries of the shadowed realms.
Shadow Cloak
Starting at 3rd level, you gain the ability to wrap yourself in a cloak of shadows, granting you enhanced stealth and protection. While in dim light or darkness, you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks. In addition, when you take the Dodge action, you can spend 1 ki point to become heavily obscured until the start of your next turn, providing you with additional defense.
Umbral Strike
At 6th level, you learn to infuse your strikes with the essence of shadows. When you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can spend 2 ki points to deal additional necrotic damage equal to your Martial Arts die. Additionally, if you are in dim light or darkness, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.
Eclipse Form
Upon reaching 11th level, you gain the ability to tap into the true power of shadows. As an action, you can spend 4 ki points to enter Eclipse Form for 1 minute. During this time, you gain the following benefits:
- You have resistance to all damage except radiant damage.
- You can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain.
- When you make a melee weapon attack, you can choose to deal additional necrotic damage equal to your Martial Arts die. On a hit, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or have its speed reduced to 0 until the start of your next turn.
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
Opportunist
Upon reaching 17th level, you gain the ability to strike with exceptional precision. If a creature within 5 feet of you is hit by an attack made by another creature, you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against that creature. This allows you to capitalize on the vulnerabilities exposed by your foes and deliver devastating counterattacks.
These subclass features, combined with the core monk abilities such as Martial Arts and Ki Points, make the Way of the Shadow Monk a formidable and elusive warrior. They excel in stealthy operations, utilizing shadows to their advantage, and striking swiftly and decisively from the darkness.
