Base Class: Ranger
Whether by luck or fate, you have bonded with a dragon hatchling, full of infinite potential. As your powers grow, your dragon grows as well, blossoming from a small four-legged companion to a majestic, winged creature large and strong enough for you to ride. Along the way, you gain an increasing share of the awe-inspiring power of dragons.
Draconic Gift
3rd-Level Dragon Warden Feature
The bond you share with your dragon creates a connection to dragonkind, granting you understanding and empowering your presence. You gain the following benefits:
Thaumaturgy. You learn the thaumaturgy cantrip, which is a ranger spell for you.
Tongue of Dragons. You learn to speak, read, and write Draconic or one other language of your choice.
Dragon Companion
3rd-Level Dragon Warden Feature
Whether by luck or fate, you have managed to bond with a dragon, and it is your responsibility to ensure its survival and growth.
The dragon is friendly to you and your companions, and it obeys your commands. See its game statistics in the statblock corresponding to its current stage of growth and note that it uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places to determine certain statistics. When your dragon is hatched, you or the DM choose a damage type: acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison. This choice is permanent and will serve as your dragon's Draconic Essense. You also determine the cosmetic characteristics of the dragon, such as its color, its scale texture, or any visible effect of its Draconic Essence; your choice has no effect on its game statistics.
In combat, the dragon shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the dragon can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.
You and the dragon are able to communicate telepathically while within 150 ft. of each other. Additionally, both you and the dragon will be able to sense the direction and mood the other is in at all times.
Should your dragon's health ever reach 0, it will die. However, you may perform an hour-long ritual to revive your dragon to full health, provided that you have 500 gold worth of materials for the ritual, more than 1 cubic foot of the dragon's remains, and it has not been more than 24 hours since the dragon's death.
Draconic Essence (Acid)
Your dragon's draconic essence is Acid. It has a draconic lineage of either Black or Copper.
Draconic Essence (Cold)
Your dragon's draconic essence is Cold. It has a draconic lineage of either White or Silver.
Draconic Essence (Fire)

Draconic Essence (Lightning)

Draconic Essence (Poison)
Your dragon's draconic essence is Poison. It has a draconic lineage of Green.
Primeval Growth
3rd-Level Dragon Warden Feature
Normally, dragons take over a century to reach adulthood. However, with the magical bond that connects you both, your dragon will grow alongside you, reaching maturity much sooner than others of its kind.
As your character gains levels in this class, your bonded dragon will grow and evolve. Starting as a small dragon hatchling, it has the potential to grow fully into an adult dragon. At levels 5, 10, 15, and 20, the dragon will enter the next stage of its development, with each one unlocking new abilities. Some of these abilities are unique to specific Draconic Essence types.
At Level 3, you obtain a Small sized Dragon Hatchling as a companion. After choosing a Draconic Essence from the Dragon Companion feature, select the option "Stage 1 - Dragon Hatchling" to view the dragon's statblock.
At Level 5, your Dragon Hatchling becomes a Medium sized Dragon Wyrmling, and is able to use its reaction to perform the Infused Strikes ability (see statblock for details).
At Level 10, your Dragon Wyrmling becomes a Large sized Young Dragon, and is able to be mounted by a Medium sized creature or smaller. The dragon also obtains a fly speed but is unable to use it while being mounted or while carrying any kind of load (may fly with a saddle equipped).
At Level 15, your Young Dragon becomes a Large sized Young Adult Dragon and is strong enough to utilize its fly speed while being mounted or carrying a load (carrying capacity determined by the DM). When flying unhindered, the dragon's flight speed is doubled.
At Level 20, your Young Adult Dragon becomes a Huge sized Adult Dragon and is now able to fully utilize its full fly speed even when mounted or under load.
WARNING: Whenever you dragon has reached the level required for its next stage of growth (levels 5, 10,15, 20), a new option will appear under this class feature. Ensure that you use this new option to select the dragon's next stage, and in order to remove the previous stage from your character sheet, select the new "MY DRAGON HAS GROWN PAST..." option that has also become available.

Bond of Fang and Scale
7th-Level Dragon Warden Feature
The bond you share with your Dragon intensifies, protecting you and stoking the dragon's fury. While your dragon is alive, you and the dragon gain the following benefits:
Primordial Fang. At level 7, the dragon's Bite attack deals an extra 1d6 of damage with the damage type matching that of the dragon's Draconic Essence. At level 17, this damage increases to 2d6.
Resistance. You gain resistance to the damage type matching the dragon's Draconic Essence.
Acid Resistance
You gain resistance to acid damage.
Cold Resistance
You gain resistance to cold damage.
Fire Resistance
You gain resistance to fire damage.
Lightning Resistance
You gain resistance to lightning damage.
Poison Resistance
You gain resistance to poison damage, and you have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned.
Dragon's Breath
11th-Level Dragon Warden Feature
As an action, you can exhale a 30-foot cone of damaging breath or cause your dragon to exhale it. The type of damage the breath causes matches your dragon's Draconic Essence. Each creature in the cone must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC, taking 8d6 damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
This damage increases to 10d6 when you reach 15th level in this class, and 12d6 when you reach 20th level in this class.
Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a spell slot of 3rd level or higher to use it again.
Perfected Bond
15th-Level Dragon Warden Feature
Your bond to your dragon reaches the pinnacle of its power. While your dragon is summoned, you and the dragon gain the following benefits:
Never Alone. Using a 1st level spell slot or higher, you can magically summon the dragon that is bound to you when it is more than 150 ft away. It appears in an unoccupied space of your choice within 30 feet of you. Any equipment that it is wearing will travel with it, but anything being carried will be left behind.
Reflexive Resistance. When either you or the dragon takes damage while you’re within 30 feet of each other, you can use your reaction to give yourself or the dragon resistance to that instance of damage. You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Posted Feb 7, 2025In the Dragon's various stat blocks some of their ability scores decrease when they "level up". They decrease in strange ways, for example the Acid Dragon Hatchling goes from having 12 CHA to having 10 CHA when it reaches the Acid Dragon Wyrmling stage; and even more strangely, the Lightning Young Adult Dragon goes from having 18 STR to having 14 STR in its Adult Dragon stage. Is this a typo or deliberate?

Posted May 10, 2024Instead of sharing damage (that can kind of get complicated), maybe have an ability that each of you can draw the opportunity attack away from the other toward yourself if you are next to each other. (i.e. you take an opportunity attack meant for you dragon or vice-versa). The feat mounted combatant kinda has this ability. That's kinda why I didn't put it in the subclass, since my plan for my build was to take that feat anyway. I hope this makes sense and answers your question.
The campaign I am currently in, I am running a melee focused ranger, but I haven't really noticed the issue, but then again, I randomly got the lightning dragon type which is more tanky than myself, so I don't really have him retreat very much. Also, later in it's growth it should have attacks that have 10 or even 15ft ranges. The early stages the dragon is meant to be more of a burden that you have to take care of and protect. With level 10+ being where the real power starts showing. or at least that was my intention. Hopefully it comes across that way :)

Posted May 9, 2024I absolutely love the way you adapted this. And I am currently trying to figure out how I could mold subclass for any class.
The difficulty I am currently running into the idea that melee focused classes would be using their dragons to attack and then retreat out of reach.
What are your thoughts on the balance of this? I was thinking you may have run into this issue with any melee focused ranger builds (though in my experience I hardly ever play one).
A thought for a way to balance is possibly having the attack of opportunities have bonded damage?
For example if the enemy was taking this attack of opportunity on the PC and they hit them for 12 damage- what if the dragon also takes 6 or 4 pts of damage since they are both quickly going out of range?
I hope this makes sense and would love to hear your thoughts. Again- amazing edits to this subclass.

Posted Nov 7, 2023Hi guys! I'm the creator of this subclass. If it wasn't obvious, this is a modified version of the Drakewarden subclass. My goal in making this was to have a subclass that had a real dragon companion that didn't feel fake. Here are some examples of this: its damage type is chosen at the start and is not changeable once chosen; it cannot be summoned until level 15; and most importantly, it has a (small) chance of permanently dying.
I also wanted to buff it compared to the original subclass, to better give the feeling of having a dragon bonded to you. Unfortunately, this has led to what I'm sure is an overpowered subclass (although I tried to keep the really overpowered stuff confined to later levels). I also had the idea of making each damage type of the dragon give unique aspects to the dragon, to make it that much more personal. Hence the 25 statblocks. I KNOW that it is overwhelming looking at all of it on this page, but I did my best to make using the subclass in character creation as painless as possible.
I am currently testing this homebrew subclass in a game, but I would appreciate it if you all could give me some feedback. I did my best to proofread, but I'm sure there are still typos. Please let me know if you find any, or if you have any suggestions on improving the subclass. I'm mostly looking for creative ways to make it more balanced without nerfing the dragon into the ground.
I hope anyone who uses has a fun time with it. Thank you!
