Base Class: Artificer
A master engineer of advanced saddles and riding gear, the Saddlewright specializes in crafting mechanical enhancements that improve speed, stability, and versatility for any mount. Whether designing adaptive harnesses for rough terrain, shock-absorbing saddles for high-speed travel, or combat-ready rigs with built-in utilities, a Saddlewright ensures that both rider and steed perform at their peak.
Mounted Artificer
If you do not already have a mount when you adopt this specialization at 3rd level, you gain one. This mount can be any beast that has a challenge rating of 1 or lower and must be at least one size larger than you. Some examples are a Riding Horse, Panther, Camel, Wolf, and Warhorse.
Saddlewright Spells
Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Saddlewright Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Engineered Saddle
Beginning at 3rd level, your work has led you to create a saddle for your mount to better perform its duties. Over the course of 1 hour that can be during a long rest, you can create your Engineered Saddle so long as you have access to Leatherworker's Tools.
While your mount is equipped with the saddle, you gain these benefits:
- You have advantage on saving throws made to avoid falling off your mount.
- If you fall off your mount and descend no more than 10 feet, you can land on your feet if you’re not incapacitated.
- The saddle cannot be removed by against either your will, or the mount's will.
- Mounting or dismounting a creature costs you only 5 feet of movement, rather than half your speed.
Additionally, you always have the Mending cantrip prepared and it doesn't count against the number of artificer cantrips you have prepared.
Saddle Model
Beginning at 3rd level, you can customize your Engineered Saddle. When you do so, choose one of the following models: Ironhide, Swiftwind or Trailwarden. The model you choose gives special bonuses while it's equipped to your mount.
You can change the armor's model whenever you finish a short or long rest, provided you have smith's tools in hand.
Ironhide
This saddle is designed to support a mount in close combat with enemies and provides the following benefits:
- When a mount equipped with this saddle hits with a melee attack, it can leverage the reinforced weight of the saddle to deal an additional 1d8 bludgeoning damage. You can deal damage only once per turn.
- The mount gains an amount of temporary hit points equal to double your artificer level and regains it on a short or long rest.
- The mount receives a +1 bonus to its armor class.
Swiftwind
This saddle is designed to be sleek and unobstructive to mounts, providing the following benefits:
- As a bonus action, you can release 2 small dart projectiles from a hidden compartment in the saddle. They count as a simple ranged weapon and have a normal range of 60 feet and a long range of 120 feet, and each dart deals 1d4 piercing damage on a hit.
- The movement speed of the mount is increased by 10 feet.
- Opportunity against both you and the mount are made at disadvantage.
- The mount equipped with this saddle has advantage on Dexterity saving throws made to avoid taking damage.
Trailwarden
This saddle is designed to be practical the rider more than the mount, providing the following benefits:
- You include specialized equipment like a pair of binoculars or a history book in the saddle. While within 10 feet of the mount equipped with this saddle, the rider has advantage with a skill that you choose when creating this saddle.
- The mount equipped with this saddle counts as one size larger when determining carrying capacity.
- The mount equipped with this saddle gains advantage on Constitution saving throws against exhaustion from long travel.
Tailored Attack
Starting at 5th level, you can attack twice, rather than once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Moreover, your mount can take the attack action in place of one of those attacks, and adds your Intelligence modifier to its attack roll when it does.
Improved Models
At 9th level, your Engineered Saddle gains additional benefits based on its model, as shown below.
Ironhide. You have enhanced this saddle’s design to better support a mount in close combat, providing the following benefits:
- Ironhide Power's damage increases by 1d8, for a total of 2d8.
- The bonus to the mount's armor class increases to +2.
Swiftwind. You have optimized this saddle to allow the mount to move with greater speed and agility, providing the following benefits:
- When firing the darts from your saddle as a bonus action, you can now make 3 dart attacks rather than just 2.
- The movement speed of the mount is increased by 10 additional feet, for a total of 20 feet.
- If the mount doesn't already have proficiency in Dexterity saving throws, it gains proficiency.
Trailwarden. You have refined this saddle to prioritize the rider’s needs, enhancing practicality and utility, providing the following benefits:
- You also gain proficiency in a skill while within 10 feet of the mount. This skill does not have to be the same one you gain advantage with.
- You have advantage on Constitution saving throws to avoid exhaustion now as well, while you are within 10 feet of the mount.
Immediate Modifications
As an action you can take a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier, you can immediately make modifications to your Engineered Saddle and change it to a different model. You regain all expended uses of this action after completing a Long Rest.
