Base Class: Barbarian
Rune of Destruction
Your runes blaze with violent power.
-
Once on each of your turns while raging, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you deal extra damage equal to your proficiency bonus.
-
The damage is the same type as the weapon’s damage.
Simple, scaling, and very barbarian.
Runic Rage
When you enter your Rage, glowing crimson runes flare across your body. Choose one Runic Aspect from the list below. The chosen aspect lasts for the duration of your Rage. You may choose a different aspect each time you Rage.
🔴 Level 3 – Runic Rage
This is the core feature.
Example Design:
-
When you enter Rage, glowing red runes appear.
-
Choose one Runic Aspect each time you rage.
Possible Aspects (choose 1 per rage):
-
Rune of Destruction – extra damage (very classic barbarian)
-
Rune of Warding – defensive boost
-
Rune of Fury – mobility or advantage effect
👉 This mirrors Totem Warrior’s flexibility and is considered balanced.
🔴 Level 6 – Runic Surge
This is where the “special barbarian magic” can show up.
Ideas:
-
Spend a Rage bonus action to:
-
explode runic energy in a small radius
-
empower a weapon attack with elemental/force/necrotic damage
-
-
OR passive effects while raging (simpler for D&D Beyond)
Example:
-
Once per rage, when you hit, deal extra damage and impose a condition (push, frighten, etc.)
🔴 Level 10 – Etched Flesh
Mid-tier survivability or utility.
Ideas:
-
Resistance to an additional damage type while raging
-
Advantage on saving throws vs spells
-
Runes remain faintly active even when not raging (ribbon + small benefit)
This keeps power scaling correctly.
🔴 Level 14 – Avatar of the Crimson Script
Big, flashy capstone.
Ideas:
-
Runes fully ignite
-
Enemies take damage just for being near you
-
You can’t be stunned/frightened while raging
-
Once per long rest, rage becomes stronger than normal
This should feel mythic, but not invincible.
Runic Surge
Runic Surge
6th-level Path of the Runebound feature
The crimson runes etched into your flesh can erupt with raw power.
Once per Rage, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack while raging, you can trigger a Runic Surge to unleash one of the following effects. The chosen effect occurs immediately after the attack hits.
Choose one of the effects below when you activate this feature:
🔴 Explosive Script
Runes flare violently outward.
-
The target takes extra damage equal to twice your Rage Damage bonus.
-
Each other creature of your choice within 5 feet of the target takes damage equal to your Rage Damage bonus.
-
The damage type is the same as the triggering attack.
🔴 Binding Runes
Glowing symbols lash around your foe.
-
The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw
DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier -
On a failure, the creature’s speed is reduced to 0 until the start of your next turn.
🔴 Searing Brand
The runes burn into your enemy’s flesh.
-
Until the start of your next turn, the target:
-
Cannot take reactions
-
Has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn
-
