Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Paladins who swear the Oath of Service choose to devote their life to the ideals of protection and loyalty. To swear this oath is to devote yourself to service, whether it be to a monarch, a noble, or a mighty beast, for the rest of your life. Loyalty to their liege is a paladin of this oath's highest honor, and they are highly sought-after knights because of this. Despite this, they are not mindlessly obedient - those who swear the Oath of Service understand that it is their duty to hold their liege to a high standard, and in private can be highly critical advisors. In public, though, they will show nothing but the utmost respect and fealty to their liege, whether they agree with them or not.

The tenets of this oath are to be dictated by the paladin's individual liege, and as such are different for each. These, however, are some of the most common tenets.

Loyalty. There is nothing more important than staying loyal to your liege. Even if you disapprove of your liege's orders, it is your duty to serve them faithfully.

Protection. You must defend your liege with your life. You are their sword and shield, and you will stay by their side no matter the danger - to flee is the ultimate act of cowardice.

Honesty. No one is perfect, and that includes your liege. Though you are expect to be obedient in your service, it is also your duty to keep your liege on the right path. You are to be their most faithful advisor, and to blunt your tongue is to betray your liege's trust.

Eternal Devotion. Your oath is not to be abandoned, no matter what happens. For as long as your liege requires, you are to serve them faithfully, until the end of your life if you have to. Your service only ends when ordered to by your liege.

Oath Spells

You learn these spells at the levels listed:

3rd: cure wounds, shield of faith

5th: aid, warding bond

9th: remove curse, spirit guardians

13th: death ward, greater invisibility

17th: greater restoration, telepathic bond

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Demand Obedience. You can use your Channel Divinity to force anyone to obey. As an action, you choose one creature within 60 feet who can hear and understand you. That creature must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the throw is a failure, the creature will see you as your liege, and will hear your liege's voice when you speak. That creature will obey any single command given in your liege's voice, so long as the command is not reasonable and not obviously suicidal. Once the command has been completed, the effect will end, and the creature will know they've been magically influenced.

Stalwart Defense. You can use your Channel Divinity to protect those who are in danger. As a reaction, when a creature makes an attack against an ally within 10 feet of you, you can intercept the attack. The attacking creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. If the throw is a failure, you block the attack, nullifying all damage. If the throw is successful, the attack deals half the damage it would have done against your ally.

Aura of Defense

Starting at 7th level, you project a defensive aura that protects allies within. When a friendly creature is within 10 feet of you, they have your Charisma modifier added to their Armor Class.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Supportive Guardian

Starting at 15th level, your strength as a guardian allows you to support your allies. As an action, you can support a creature within 5 feet of you. While you're supporting a creature, they can use your modifiers in place of their own, and they have advantage on attack rolls and saving throws. If a creature you're supporting is attacked, you can make an Attack of Opportunity as a reaction. This support lasts until the end of your next turn.

Highest Honor

At 20th level, you have proven yourself as among your liege's most dedicated servants. The bond you have forced with your liege is unbreakable, and grants you the following benefits.

  • You can communicate with your liege telepathically, from any plane.
  • When you are within 50 feet of your liege, you have advantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.
  • Your liege cannot die unless you are killed first.
  • Though you age normally, you will not die of old age until your oath is released.
