Base Class: Rogue
A warlord approaches a small town with his band, pausing to survey the terrain and prepare to attack. He opens his mouth to give the order to charge, but emits nothing more than a chocked gurgle as he falls from his horse, much to the dismay of his followers. A tiefling ducks down from the roof he was stationed on, disassembling his gun. He nods to himself, another job well executed.
Ghosts are some of the most widely feared combatants on the battlefield, picking off commanders and major targets from a far distance, striking, and then fading back away to a different position. Each ghost has a unique flair, but all of them set terror into the hearts of their foes, right up until they crush them with their rifle before they can scream.
Rifle Creation
By level three, you have created or otherwise modified another firearm into a high powered rifle. At base, this rifle is a two handed weapon, with a range of 300ft and long range of 1200ft, dealing 2d6 (or a number of d6 equal to half your sneak attack, whichever is higher) piercing damage on a hit. The rifle holds one bullet at a time, requiring the use of an action to reload after firing.
The use of this weapon requires precise aim and steady hands, and requires you to take an action to steady your aim before you can start making attacks. So long as you do not move after using the action spent to steady your aim, you gain advantage on all attacks made with your rifle, and do not have to use another action to maintain steady aim.
(Work with your dm to determine when the damage of the rifle will become magical, if it is magical from the start, or if you will gain an improved rifle later on.)
(The damage of the rifle, with sneak attack, should be on par with a rogue using a shortsword (or possibly worse than a shortsword rogue at ~10th level), but in a slightly more burst damage style of attacking. Feel free to work with your dm to change it if you feel it is too powerful, or underpowered.)
Phantom Bullet
At 3rd level, you can strike terror into your enemies from just the threat of your attacks, making them visualize a ghostly image of your bullet striking them. Whenever you kill an enemy with your rifle, you can make an enemy within 30 feet of them make a wisdom saving throw. (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your intelligence modifier). On a fail, the target takes 2d6 psychic damage becomes frightened of you, making another saving throw at the end of each of their turns, remaining frightened until a success. On a success, the enemy takes no damage, and is not frightened of you.
Combat Slide
Starting at 9th level, you can prepare yourself to fire at a moments notice. A number of times equal to your intelligence modifier (minimum 1) per long rest, you can use a bonus action to enter into a slide, moving up to half of your movement speed in a direction of your choice, and immediately steadying your aim as part of the slide.
Signature Grenade
By 13th level, you have created a signature grenade, which you can use to provide yourself with more options on the battlefield. Choose one of the following types of grenades as your signature grenade. You can restore your ability to access the grenades over a long rest, so long as you have natural resources or the materials to do so. Should the grenade require a saving throw, the DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your intelligence modifier.
Gas Cloud
Pick a point within 60 feet. You throw a toxic grenade that poisons your foes, affecting all creatures within 10 feet of it. All affected creatures have to make a constitution saving throw, or take 2d4 poison damage and be poisoned until the start of your next turn. You can use this ability twice per long rest.
Instant Cover
You throw down a grenade that creates a steel shell around the front of where it lands. Pick a creature within 30 feet. As a bonus action, you give them (or yourself) half cover until your next turn. You can use this ability twice per long rest.
Magic Deflector
As a bonus action, you throw down a grenade at a point within 30 feet of you, and prepare to defend yourself from spells. For one minute, should an enemy cast a spell within 120 feet of it, or their spell enters into that area of it, you can use your reaction to cast counterspell at a level equal to 1/5 of your level (rounded up). You can use this ability twice per long rest.
Medkit
As a bonus action, you throw down a grenade at a point within 30 feet of you, where a pink mist begins to spray from. All creatures within 10 feet of the grenade are healed for 2d4 hp. This ability can be used twice per long rest.
Smoke Them Out
You gain a smoke grenade, that allows you to hide your movements, or confuse enemies. As a bonus action, you can throw down a grenade at a point within 30 feet of you, and cast fog cloud centered at that point. You can use this ability twice per long rest.
Bullet Lines
When you reach 17th level, you can enhance your rifle's capabilities with the practice of a master, seeming to see where your and your enemies bullets will fly. As a bonus action, you can enter a state of extreme focus for one minute. While in this state, you gain the following benefits:
- You can use your reaction to make an enemy's attack against you have disadvantage.
- Whenever you would attack with your rifle (having steady aim and ammo), you can choose to fire a piercing shot, in a 300 by 5 foot line. Enemies inside of this line must make a dexterity saving throw using your grenade DC, on a fail taking the damage of the shot as normal, and on a success they take half damage. Sneak attack can be applied to the damage of this attack.
Once you have used this ability, you must take a long rest before being able to use it again.

Posted May 6, 2023This is quite good. I'm going to maybe borrow this for one of my campaigns.

Posted Feb 19, 2021Having to spend your action doing nothing for so many turns doesn't seem like much fun
