Base Class: Warlock

You have formed a soul bond with a magical faerie, and this bond enables you to draw magical power from the emotional spectrum. As a faerie warlock, you are a powerful empath, and you let yourself be guided by feeling and intuition more so than logic and reason.
While most faerie keepers like you will advocate for a careful balance of emotions, there are some who indulge in one emotion in particular: joyful dancers spreading cheer wherever they go, wrathful rage-mages on a path of vengeance, grieving hermits who wallow in their sorrow, or frightful fear mongers who collect dark secrets.
WHAT IS A FAERIE
In the context of this otherworldly patron, faeries are considered to be tiny butterfly-like fey with a primitive intellect. These creatures are nourished by strong emotions: they enjoy ecstatic joy, horrible fright, dreadful anger and deep sorrow all the same. Faeries usually survive in places with extraordinary amounts of ambient magic, like druidic groves, spell scars, arcane libraries or planar portals. Within those places, they gravitate towards congregations of intelligent beings, where they may find sufficient nourishment. Once bound to a warlock, a faerie gets all the nourishment they need from them, and can survive without being near a place of power.
FINDING YOUR FAERIE
The circumstances under which a warlock may enter into a partnership with such a creature are diverse, but once the pact is made, the covenant is simple: the faerie finds nourishment in the warlock, and the warlock channels the faerie's magical energy. In the list below you can find a number of suggestions for how your character adopted a faerie as their otherworldly patron.
1D8: Faerie Patron Origin
- During a time of great sorrow, a faerie appeared to you. You found solace in its presence, and you have not been apart since.
- Your faerie was passed on to you when your parents passed away: they were faerie keepers, as were their parents before them.
- After you committed a terrible deed in a flash of anger, a faerie appeared to you. It has given you the means to channel your fury.
- You were lost in the Feywild for a time, and a faerie showed you the way home.
- As you were cowering from a frightful monster, a faerie appeared to you. Its magic helped you overcome your fear and confront the beast.
- You performed an elaborate ritual or play in order to attract a faerie to you.
- In a moment of exuberant joy, a faerie appeared to you. It helped you capture that moment, so you will never forget how it felt.
- You were awarded the privilege of bonding with a faerie after a years-long process of study and meditation with a druidic order
YOUR FAERIE WARLOCK
Most people think of warlocks as evil wizards, dark and brooding. When your otherworldly patron is a glittering faerie, this is most likely not the case. Below we outline some suggestions for adding a distinctly sparkly flavor to your faerie warlock.
FAERIE WARLOCK PERSONALITY TRAITS
Your bond with your faerie may be such a big part of your life that it affects your personality traits. In the list below you will find suggestions for these personality traits: choose one or multiple from the table below, or roll to determine a random personality trait. You can also come up with your own personality traits, or ignore them completely.
1D6: Faerie Warlock Personality Traits Table
- You have a penchant for a single bright color, and tend to curate your possessions to match it.
- You prefer to dress in many layers of brightly colored fabrics - the more the better.
- You vividly experience other people's stories, as if they are happening to you.
- You enjoy singing, and burst into song at any occasion.
- You express your emotions openly and unabashedly.
- You have a deep reverence of the fey, and uphold many of their superstitions.
PACT BOONS FOR THE FAERIE PATRON
At third level, a warlock receives a pact boon from their patron. In the list below you'll find suggestions to give this boon a distinctly fey flavor.
- Pact of the Chain
The familiar granted by your faerie bond may be a cute animal that is particularly fluffy, glows softly in the dark or has a set of (non-functional) iridescent wings. A pseudodragon may appear as a faerie dragon with butterfly wings, and a sprite may appear as a second faerie. - Pact of the Blade
The weapon that you create through your pact may have a translucent iridescent blade that resembles insect wings, be made of a sparkly material or trail rainbows behind when it moves. - Pact of the Tome
Your book of shadows may come in the form of a pristine book with a shiny or tufted cover, have scented pages or come with a small, heart-shaped lock.
Faerie Bond
When you choose this warlock subclass at 1st-level, you form a soul-bond with a faerie. The faerie retains a will of its own, but gladly accompanies you wherever you go, doing whatever it can to remain close to you at all times. When your faerie travels further than 100 feet away from you or is incapacitated or killed, you become unable to use your Protective Chrysalis, Sense Emotions, Emotive Spells, Empathic Boon, Alter Emotions and Faerie Flight class features, and any active effects from those features end immediately. While your faerie is on the same plane as you and you can't see it, you can sense how far away from you it is (in 100-feet increments), and which direction to travel to reach it.
Your faerie does not roll for initiative, and acts on your turn. You can use your free verbal action to request your faerie take a specific action or move to a designated location. It will obey your instructions, unless they threaten its or your safety. If left without instruction, the faerie's primary motivations are to stay close to you, and to keep you and itself from harm.
Regardless of how they may be found elsewhere, once a faerie is bound to you it has the following game statistics:
- STR: -3
- DEX: +2
- CON: -1
- INT: -3
- WIS: +4
- CHA: +4
- AC: 13
- Ethereal Wings: Your faerie has advantage on saving throws made against spells, and is resistant to all types of damage except Necrotic.
- Speed: Your faerie can fly. In addition, it's flying speed is always equal to your fastest speed, be it walking, swimming or flying.
- Hit Points: Your faerie grows stronger as you gain warlock levels. It has an amount of hit points equal to 10 + your warlock level. In addition, your faerie restores all of its lost hit points when completing a short or long rest.
If your faerie is lost or killed, you can perform a 1-hour ritual to do any of the following:
Revive Your Faerie: In order to do this, you must have access to its remains
Forge a New Bond with a Different Faerie: This faerie must be willing to bond with you. Doing so destroys the bond you had with your previous faerie.
Protective Chrysalis
When your faerie becomes the target of a spell or attack, you can use your reaction to instantly encase it in a crystal chrysalis, preventing any damage or other effects from the triggering spell or attack. Your faerie emerges from its chrysalis at the end of your next turn.
While inside its chrysalis, your faerie is immune to all damage, conditions and other effects, and any conditions or other effects on it end immediately. Your faerie is unable to move, remaining suspended in the air where it became encased until it emerges. In addition, you are unable to use your Emotive Spells, Sense Emotions, Empathic Boon, Alter Emotions and Faerie Flight class features while your faerie is in its chrysalis, and any ongoing effects from those features are suspended.
You can't use this feature again until you have completed a short or long rest.
Sense Emotions
Through the bond with your faerie, you become more sensitive to the emotional state of other people. When you touch a humanoid creature, you are able to feel their emotions as if they were yours.
In addition, when you make a Wisdom (Insight) skill check, you can add your charisma modifier to the roll, instead of your wisdom modifier.
Emotive Spells
At any given time, your faerie represents one of four core emotions: Anger, Sadness, Fear or Joy. You can cast a different set of emotive spells depending on the core emotion your faerie spirit represents at that time, and you gain access to higher level emotive spells as you gain warlock levels, as shown in the Emotive Spells List. When casting an emotive spell, you must expend a spell slot and use the required spell components as usual. You can change your faerie's core emotion over the course of a long or short rest, by evoking the target emotion within yourself.
EMOTIVE SPELLS LIST
- ANGER:
- 1st Level (Cantrip): Vicious Mockery
- 1st Level: Inflict Wounds

EMOTIVE SPELLS VARIANT RULE: MOOD SWING
The bond between warlock and faerie can manifest in various ways. Some warlocks are unaffected by their faerie's emotion, but most share their feelings through their bond to some degree. It is possible for a faerie's core emotion to shift if the warlock is experiencing a sudden wave of emotions, brought on by shock, surprise, or trauma. If this style of play appeals to you, ask your GM if you can use the following variant rule:
If you feel your character is experiencing an emotional event that would shift their faerie's core emotion to a different state, you can call for a Mood Swing. If the Game Master allows it, you can change your faerie's core emotion instantly.
Some examples of situations that may call for a Mood Swing:
- A villainous scoundrel is testing your patience, and you finally snap and switch to anger
- An ally is struck with a mortal wound, and you are stricken with grief, switching to sadness.
- When a foe who has been stalking your party suddenly appears, you are so frightened you switch to fear.
- When an ally shows up to save the day, a renewed sense of hope lifts your spirits, switching to joy.
Empathic Boon
Beginning at 6th-level, you gain a boon depending on which core emotion your faerie currently represents, as described in the list below:
EMPATHIC BOON LIST
- Anger Boon: Raging Blows
- Your melee weapon attacks and unarmed strikes deal bonus damage equal to your charisma modifier
- Sadness Boon: Woeful Blast
- Any creature hit by your eldritch blast cantrip has disadvantage on the next saving throw they make before the start of your next turn.
- Fear Boon: Horrific Blast
- Any humanoid creature hit by your eldritch blast cantrip must make a wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, they are frightened until the end of their next turn.
- Joy Boon: Ecstatic Shield
- Whenever you cast heroism, enhance ability, or beacon of hope, the target also gains an amount of temporary hit points equal to your warlock level.
Alter Emotions
Starting at 10th-level, your faerie enables you to alter the emotions of humanoid creatures. You can cast the Calm Emotions and Amplify Emotions spells at will, without expending a spell slot.
CALM EMOTIONS | 2nd level enchantment spell
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: 60 feet
- Components: V, S
- Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
- Available For: Bard, Cleric
- You attempt to suppress strong emotions in a group of people. Each humanoid in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point you choose within range must make a charisma saving throw: a creature can choose to fail this saving throw if it wishes. If a creature fails its saving throw, choose one of the following two effects
- Suppress any effect causing a target to be charmed or frightened. When this spell ends, any suppressed effect resumes, provided that its duration has not expired in the meantime.
- Make a target indifferent about creatures of your choice that it is hostile toward. This indifference ends if the target is attacked or harmed by a spell or if it witnesses any of its friends being harmed. When the spell ends, the creature becomes hostile again, unless the GM rules otherwise.
AMPLIFY EMOTIONS
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: 60 feet
- Components: V, S
- Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
- Available For: Bard, Cleric of a target within 60 feet. The target must make a charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the target is overwhelmed by a powerful surge of emotions. While the target is overwhelmed, they suffer the following effects:
- They move at half their speed.
- They have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.
- They are unable to concentrate on spells, or cast spells of 3rd-level or higher.
- The overwhelmed creature can repeat their saving throw at the end of each of their turns, or when another creature uses their action to help them. Once a target has successfully saved against this spell, they become immune to its effects for 1 hour. This spell has no effect on creatures who are immune to charm effects, are incapable of experiencing emotions, or are capable of entering a barbarian rage.
Faerie Flight
Starting at 14th level, you can use a bonus action to manifest a pair of glittering faerie wings. You gain a flying speed of 60 feet until you use an action to dismiss these wings.

Posted Dec 20, 2020this is so cool i love it, but on of the spells listed for joy heroism isn't an option when picking spells. i think you put beacon of hope instead. also is there any way to change it so i can just chose the emotion instead of the spells individually so i don't have to have to pick them every time for the variant Mood swing. if not thats cool i still love this subclass.
