Base Class: Wizard
This school is that of mages that focus their studies in the art of tax evasion. These mages are capable of deceiving others, and detecting similar deception within others, as well as evading taxes. Some tax evaders use their beguiling nature for mundane tasks, such as getting away with shoplifting. However, some tax evaders use their powers for far more sinister means, such as taking control of nations and using their charismatic abilities to rule unopposed.
Minor Tax Evasion
Your training in the school of tax evasion enables you to, on occasion, completely avert the cost of transcribing spells into your spellbook. When copying a spell of a spell level lower than the maximum level you are capable of casting into your spellbook, you may roll 1d100. If a number from 00-05 is rolled, the spell costs nothing to transcribe. Anything between a 06-15, the spell costs half to transcribe. Anything between 16-94, the spell costs the normal amount. However, if you roll anything between from 95-99, the spell transcription fails, and you have wasted the cost of transcription, and the copying process must be attempted again.
Tax Conman
Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, your abilities to con your way out of situations becomes extraordinary. You gain proficiency with the Deception and Persuasion skills, if you do not have them already. Additionally, you gain the Friends cantrip. If you already know this cantrip, you may learn a different wizard cantrip of your choice. This cantrip does not count against your number of cantrips known.
Deceiver's Clarity
Starting at 6th level, your ability to deceive others has grown to the extent that you can recognize the signs of it within other beings. When purchasing any items, you may roll an Insight check with advantage to learn if the price is fair or not. You also gain advantage on saving throws against being charmed.
Silver-Tongued
At 6th level, you add the Fast Friends spell to your spellbook, if it is not there already. You can cast Fast Friends without expending a spell slot. However, when you cast the spell in this way, the target does not know it was charmed by you upon the spell ending.
Once you cast Fast Friends in this way, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest, though you can still cast it normally using an available spell slot.
Greater Tax Evasion
You have progressed in your studies in the School of Tax Evasion to the point where it has made evading taxes significantly easier. Starting at 10th level, when copying any spell into your spellbook, you may roll a d100. If a number from 00-15 is rolled, the spell costs nothing to transcribe. Anything between a 16-50, the spell costs half to transcribe. Anything between 51-94, the spell costs the normal amount. However, if you roll anything between from 95-99, the spell transcription fails, and you have wasted the cost of transcription, and the copying process must be attempted again.
Sight of the Misleader
Starting at 14th level, your ability to evade and cheat your way out of situations has grown to the extent where you can see through the trickery of others. As a bonus action, you may temporarily gain truesight until the end of your next turn. You may use this ability a number of times equivalent to your Intelligence modifier. You regain all expended uses upon finishing a long rest.

At Greater, Free goes to 50, half to 75, Fails stays the same and Normal fills in the gap.

Posted Nov 29, 2024Cool subclass! I would use a table for percentages in Minor and Greater Tax Evasion, so it's easier to read

Posted Feb 25, 2024Seems really weak to be honest. Like, compared to divination or scribes this seems like sad pudding that fell on the sidewalk. I'm not trying to be mean, but like it needs a buff. Give a boost to the spells that you've swindled into your book?

Posted Aug 4, 2023Great subclass but i feel an ability for reducing the cost of gold based spell components would work better than some of the deception features

"Copying a Spell into the Book. When you find a wizard spell of 1st level or higher, you can add it to your spellbook if it is of a spell level you can prepare and if you can spare the time to decipher and copy it.
Copying that spell into your spellbook involves reproducing the basic form of the spell, then deciphering the unique system of notation used by the wizard who wrote it. You must practice the spell until you understand the sounds or gestures required, then transcribe it into your spellbook using your own notation.
For each level of the spell, the process takes 2 hours and costs 50 gp. The cost represents material components you expend as you experiment with the spell to master it, as well as the fine inks you need to record it. Once you have spent this time and money, you can prepare the spell just like your other spells."

Posted Apr 22, 2022i'll simply state that no where in 5th Edition does it state that you have to spend anything to transcribe spells. You have to use special materials that cost a certain amount. Nowhere does it say you have to buy them.

Posted Apr 13, 2022I absolutely love this class. It is well thought through and well balanced. Thought it would be a joke but clearly is not. I do have a small issue and i guess it just a pet peeve but when you roll a d100 you cannot roll a 0 and the max to roll is 100 not 99. Again, this is just a personal pet peeve of mine. But all in all this may be one of the coolest subclasses ive seen homebrewed or not. I love it and if possible it may be my next wizard.

Posted May 4, 2021This is very balanced and well thought-out. Lots of roleplay opportunity here, I would definitely love to see this in a campaign, whether as a character or as a NPC. I also like Flailman's idea of the extra money idea. No need to edit though, it's D&D after all and anyone can tweak anything. Great job turning what seems to be a joke into a very serious and unique subclass! :)
Please check out my many homebrews: Freediver (feat), Ornithor (race), Druidic Enhancement (spell), Ring of Death (magic item), and many more.

Posted Feb 26, 2021Surprisingly good. I thought it would be a joke, but it seems pretty good and balanced. I might play one if it gets to the top of the list over my overwhelming pile of character sheets.
