Rogue
Base Class: Rogue

Sly and cunning, these scoundrels use the shadows to heighten their potential, using them as a natural extension of themselves in the form of tools and even a shadowy companion to fight alongside them.

Cowl of Shadow

At 3rd level, you are able to call upon the shadows to aid you. You gain the following benefits:

  • When you are wielding no other weapons, you can cause shadows to cloak your body, making it into its own weapon. In doing so, your unarmed strikes gain the finesse property and can use your Dexterity modifier. On hit, you deal 1d6 + your Strength or Dexterity (your choice) necrotic damage. Unarmed attacks from this feature also benefit from Sneak attack.
  • You gain sneak attack against a creature whenever your Shade Beast is within 5 feet of you. You also gain sneak attack against a creature if your Shade Beast is within 5 feet of it.
  • If you can't already, you learn to speak, read, and write Abyssal

Shade Beast

At 3rd level, you are able to weave shadows into a companion that fights alongside you. It is friendly to you and your companions, and it obeys your commands. See this creature's game statistics in the Shade Beast stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places. You determine the creature's appearance and whether it has two legs or four; your choice has no effect on its game statistics. Your shade beast could take on the appearance of a shadowy wolf, a black tiger, or some other appearance.

In combat, the Shade Beast shares your initiative count, but takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you use your bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If your are incapacitated, the Shade Beast can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

If the beast drops to 0 hit points, it fades away into a black fog. Your beast can be summoned again by spending 1 minute to perform a ritual to do so. You can re-summon your beast a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per short or long rest. You can only have one beast at once, creating a second beast causes the first beast to perish.

Beastial Savagery

At 9th level, your Shade Beast manifests new strength. When your Shade Beast lands a successful Bite attack, you can force its target to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes damage equal to 5 + half of your Rogue level (rounded up) and is frightened of you until the start of your next turn.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.

Umbral Savant

When you reach 13th level, your shadows become more potent. The damage of your unarmed strikes from your Cowl of Shadow feature increase from 1d6 to 1d8. Additionally, you can use your Cowl of Shadow to make a ranged attack, firing off a shadowy fragment at a creature within 60 feet that you can see. On hit, the target takes 1d8 + your Strength or Dexterity modifier (your choice) necrotic damage. Lastly, when you deal sneak attack damage to a creature, if your beast is within 5 feet of that creature it can use its reaction to make a Bite attack against that creature.

At 17th level, you and your Shade Beast have become one with shadows. You gain the following benefits:

  • Your Shade Beast grows to large size.
  • You gain resistance to necrotic damage.
  • You and your Shade Beast can become invisible in dim-light or darkness as a bonus action. You remain invisible for 1 minute or until either of you make an attack or cast a spell.
  • Attacks from you and your Shade Beast ignore necrotic damage resistance and treat necrotic damage immunity as necrotic damage resistance (halved damage).
