i really wish we could buy one-time char sheet packages. A monthly sub might not be sustainable for me (or others) but being able to buy another 6 sheets for $6.00 would be cool.

You don't OWN your books on DDB: WotC can change them any time. What do you think will happen when OneD&D comes out?

the 6 char limit is indeed crappy, annoying, and mostly pointless because you can just create a second (or more) account(s).
Except those additional accounts wouldn’t have access to any content you purchased in the first one. I managed with the 6 character limit for a long time, exporting characters as PDFs and them deleting them here when I needed a new slot. I finally got a hero sub, and love it. I would have no objection to being able to purchase X more slots for $x, in addition to the “sub for unlimited” current option, but I doubt it’s going to happen.

Except content can be automatically shared in a campaign... If they play in campaigns with people that have purchased the content, they can make as many accounts as needed for characters.
I'd much rather see unlimited (or a reasonably increased cap) characters on free accounts, have all source books (not published adventures) available to Hero Tier (with no sharing), and all published content available to Master Tier (with sharing). As it stands right now, there is absolutely zero incentive for most people to ever purchase a single item from WotC. In the past, there was at least always incentive for someone to buy their own copy of the PHB, but why bother now?
Most of us have been in more than one campaign at a time. Before DDB, how many campaigns had every source book published? How many groups had to mix & match sources each individual had purchased? How many times have we had character concepts that wouldn't work because the DM didn't have the one supplement needed for it? Wouldn't it be great if I knew that, regardless of whether a DM decides to not use a particular source, I'd always have access to all the sources that are being used by the campaigns I'm in (without having to rely on the DM having purchased all sources & a master sub).
Most DMs will have purchased the legendary bundle & a Master subscription. Let's assume they are starting a campaign that will last 5 months and has 5 players. That means one person will pay $484.10 for this campaign (Bundle is at $454.15 currently). They can take their content to any game they play or DM, sure, but that's a daunting bar of entry for most folks. They will need a new Master sub to continue sharing, so that's one person that becomes part of the $5.99 per month revenue stream.
If everyone with a Hero Tier sub had access to all content, the same group may opt to get Hero Tier subscriptions instead of the DM dropping all the cash. This scenario would net 6 Hero Tier subscriptions at $2.99 a month, for a total of $89.70 over the course of their 5 month campaign. For a group of this size (pretty average) it would take a little over 2 years to outpace the revenue of a single DM with Bundle & Master sub, but D&D is not a sub-2 year hobby... nor is it a hobby that occurs in a vacuum. Larger groups would outpace the current revenue model faster, and the Legendary Bundle would likely be purchased at a rate similar to now.
Most people that are primarily DMs are probably going to still purchase all content & Master sub whether their players have Hero subs or not, but I don't see ANY value in the current Hero Tier... for $2.99 a month you get:
No Ads... okay, I've literally never seen an ad while on DDB? Either that, or they're just so ineffective that I don't even remember seeing them.
6 character slots... arbitrary limit that can easily be circumvented with no downside. If character slots are the main selling point on a subscription, you're probably not getting many...
Adding publicly shared homebrew... who cares? Homebrew is an option that is only applicable in a campaign where the DM has explicitly allowed it, and most DMs that allow homebrew only allow their homebrew... either the player can create the homebrew themselves (with DM approval) for free, or a DM with Master sub can share approved homebrew in their campaign(s).
Unlimited mobile devices... who is playing on more than 2 phones or tablets at the same time?! If a group is comprised of 2 or more people without a single phone, tablet, laptop, etc., let's be honest... that group is probably playing with printed sheets anyway, and the probability of their DM having Bundle + Master sub is lower than the probability of having a winning lottery ticket.
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
So you don't see the value. That's fine, then don't pay for it. But you make a lot of assumptions on who is buying what, using the site in what way, etc...
Dndbeyond has the hard numbers. They know how many accounts buy how many books, how many characters they have, etc. They then determine what number of offered free slots is of value but also then gives incentive to buy more and what price people are willing to pay to get that.
I personally buy the hero sub even though I only have 5 actual characters I use. But I like to tinker and so I wanted more slots. And for about $25 a year I get them. To me it's a great value. I could make a 1000 on paper characters based on the books I have bought.
Simple math word problem: If Will Wheaton buys the books and creates an account he will have 6 character sheets. If Will Wheaton creates the maximum campaign's of 3, he can then invite up to 12 players. Will is broke though and just wants more character sheets with out paying the monthly fee. Will can create emails for free. How many character sheets can Will Wheaton create and still use his books.
6; content can be shared only with a Master Tier subscription.
Hello,
How do I receive more than 6 character slots? I have bought stuff off the dnd website, so I thought that was how to do it. But nothing changed.
More than 6 characters slots can be unlocked only with a subscription.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/subscribe
So, if I wanted to buy all the books, would cost £300+, I would still have to subscribe to get more than my 6 characters?
Yes.

― Oscar Wilde.
What happens if I have more than 6 characters, but my subscription runs out?
You will be asked to choose 6 characters to keep unlocked, while the others, while not deleted, will be locked until a new subscription kicks in.
Thank you! For the answer + a super speedy reply :)

Damit foiled again by those crazy kids!
Kinda regret spending money on content now that I've learned this...
It seems weird you'd be disappointed given that the language is pretty clear. Nowhere does it saying buying content gives you bonus slots
