For those wondering which items work best with the character builder:
Player's Handbook
$19.99 (first week)
DMG Magic Items
$12.99
SCAG Races
$5.99
SCAG Classes
$7.99
SCAG Backgrounds
$3.99
VGtM Races
$9.99
Total
$61.94
I'd say these are the basics. Of course there could be more such as monsters for druids and magic items from the adventures. But those can be picked up on an as needed basis. The above options should cover most characters (for builder purposes).

I do have a question though. Do the above items provide their information in the compendium as well as the character builder? For example, if I bought the VGtM Races, would I see those races' details in the compendium? Or do I have to buy the entire source's compendium content to see those items?

Compendium pages are available through the entire source or the compendium content bundle - unlocking a race's details individually makes that race available in the toolset.
When a book is purchased, we are essentially purchasing a digital version of the book that can be read like any other ebook, correct? Along with the content integration for character sheets and magical items and such.
Even if i can only access the book on DDB, it would be nice to be able to flip through the books I purchase here that I don't own physically.
In addition to the builder integration, the compendium integration will function much like it is now, but with all the content you've purchased included.
So, there will be no digital book for me to read through, even if I were to purchase the DMG or Hoard of the Dragon Queen fully?

Surely, there will be the digital version of the books like an e-book.

It might help if you defined "e-book". I think people are working from different baselines, here.
I'm assuming the Compendium will contain the full text of the print book, just arranged in a way that makes sense with the medium. That's pretty much an e-book, as far as I'm concerned, though there's definitely room for debate.
I've never seen even the vaguest nod towards a pdf, mobi, epub, etc. related to DDB. Curse is creating a digital/online tool for D&D, not becoming a digital publishing house. If you want a PDF of the 5E books, you'll have to go to DMs Guild -- I'm not sure they're available there, as I've never checked.
Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with DDB in any way beyond visiting these forums most days.

Yes I need to make a clarification. The purchasable books in DDB can be seen as a "e-book" within DDB. Word-by-word equal to the physical book, with links and tooltips to spells, monsters, conditions and so on. There will not be an exportable file, like a PDF.
As a side note, WotC does not sell PDF of their books anywhere.

Thank you. I am considering purchasing the Legendary bundle. I would be very disappointed if I was unable to flip through the books after making that large of a purchase.
I would liken the e-books you're purchasing here to the proprietary software used in education - with a major caveat. The layout and search response I've experienced using the compendium that Curse have here is leagues above and (Dare I say?) beyond the e-textbooks I have played around with.
A PDF is not possible due to the ability to then pirate the content. And e-books that require special software that can check a license to prevent such a thing would be unpopular. The app they'll provide will likely have full search functionality and the same easy navigation the website has. And with that you'll have offline access.

As long as the app provides offline access (it will) and I can just keep it installed on my device and always have the stuff I've bought should Curse & WOTC ever go bust (which I'm sure it will (the content being available not the duo going bust)) then I'm happy. There is a thing I can pay for, it doesn't go away for good if the company do therefore is a tangible thing. Boom, happy.
So this might be a stupid question, but how do we access the content? I just payed for the Legendary bundle. When I click on a title (say, Curse of Strahd), it just takes me to the marketplace page for that book. Surely we'll be able to *read* a module in addition to having access to the linked content in the database... Am I missing something (which is highly probable)?

I rebooted and all of the adventure titles except Strahd work as they should. The old bloodsucker link still takes me to the marketplace page... which is weird, because when I hover over the link, the info bar says the link directs to "https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/adventures/cos", but when I click it, it goes to the marketplace.
I guess maybe the bugs forum would be a better place for this post.
I see no reason the store bought books can't have a one time coupon printed inside them for 50% off the book. People are less likely to steal something that they have to pay for anyway. Also stores should keep books plastic wrapped and behind counters and only have a display copy out,. that's just smart business.
Can the DM decide what unlocked content gets shared? For instance if you have Volo's Guide can you just share the player stuff with players or do you have to share all the monster stats too? Also does it let you at least choose which books or if for instance you have the adventure you're currently running does it share it with the players who can then cheat off it if they wanted?

Query: Are player maps that you would use with a VTT also included with the adventures?
