I believe the Athletics bonus for the Battle Smith's Steel Defender is incorrectly calculated. The stat block for the Steel Defender on the Artificer page states the Athletics bonus is 2 + you character's proficiency bonus. Thus, a level 3 artificer's Steel Defender should have a +4 to Athletics. However, my level 3 artificer's Steel Defender has a +6 bonus to Athletics.
My guess is that that the error comes from the wording of the stat black. It makes it seem like the total should be your strength score + 2 + your proficiency bonus, when the +2 IS your strength score.
I had just noticed the same issue, glad to see I'm not the only one who's run into it. The creature itself is listed on here as an entity with +4 Athletics, so that's right at least for the base level. But adding it as a Battle Smith companion in the extras tab does still bump it to +6 still, here a couple of months later.
The Perception bonus, I've noticed as well, is a base +2 on the creature's stat block, but a +4 when added as a Battle Smith companion. So it is just likely to be a small error from where player's proficiency is being added now to the stat block and adjusting the initial values down to make it right.
No adjustment to the Saving Throws, Force-empowered Rend, or Repair values as of yet, so it's just a WIP thing.
HP scales correctly though!
Appreciate the hard work to get things tidied up, keep up the good work dndbeyond crew!
They haven’t quite figured out yet how to do monster statblocks that draw stats from the character sheets yet. They are working on it, but for now it still doesn’t quite work properly yet.
