Character: 2nd level Forest Gnome Wizard, School of Illusion
I purchased access to the Player's Handbook via the Marketplace, giving me access to the Forest Gnome subrace for my character sheet, which gives:
Natural Illusionist. You know the minor illusion cantrip. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it.
At 2nd level, I chose the School of Illusion for my Arcane Tradition, which gives Improved Minor Illusion:
When you choose this school at 2nd level, you learn the minor illusion cantrip. If you already know this cantrip, you learn a different wizard cantrip of your choice. The cantrip doesn’t count against your number of cantrips known.
I am unable to select "a different wizard cantrip of my choice" in the Character Builder, and my character sheet now shows 2 minor illusions in my spellbook.
Yes, it’s a well known and very old bug that’s been around since, like, 2014 when the PHB first came out. The easiest fix is to “create a homebrew” Subrace for gnomes using the Forest Gnome as your template and edit the Natural Illusionist trait. Scroll down and expand the “Spells” section and edit the entry. The very first field is labeled “SPELL,” delete the minor illusion cantrip. In the very next field labeled “SPELL LEVELS,” select “Cantrip,” and the very next field after that is labeled “SPELL CLASS,” there select “Wizard.” After that, scroll to the bottom and [SAVE] that form. Then [SAVE CHANGES] for that racial trait, and then after the page refreshes, hit “Cancel” right next to where you just saved the changes. That will automatically redirect you to the Basic Information page for that subrace, hit [SAVE CHANGES] again there to lock it all in.
Go to your character and hit “Edit,” go to the Race tab and click “Change Race,” find your “Copy_of_Forest Gnome” and change you character’s race to that. Then, pick your new cantrip from the dropdown. The whole thing should take fewer than 10 minutes, pro’ly fewer than 6 to be honest. Finito é basta.
