"Illogically assumes", fixed it for you. If they aren't replying to me or quoting me, what does it have to do with me? On top of that, if I have disabled notifications, why would I still want to received them?
You most likely have the following enabled when you should disable them:
Automatically subscribe me to threads I post in
Threads you are subscribed to
The assumption is that people want to participate in a discussion, rather than just blasting their opinion out into the ether and vanishing. This isn't twitter afterall.
I posted once, early on in a thread, (the new map announcement one) and I can't stop getting notifications for it.

Same problem here, very annoying. Why would I want to be notified every time someone posts in a thread when they aren't even responding to me.
Because the forum (logically?) assumes, if you partake in a thread, you're interested in the topic. Not just what is said to you directly.

If you want to disable notifications, you can do so via Account >> Notification Settings
