I wanted to quickly look up some details for a flask of alchemist's fire, so I typed "alchemist" into the search box (without quotes), hit enter, and then clicked the "Items" filter on the search results page. The results did not include a flask of alchemist's fire - there was only one match: "Keg of alchemist's fire". I understand why that's a match, but not why the flask is missing.
If I search for "flask" instead and filter by items, the third item in the list is "Alchemist's fire (flask)". So it can appear in search results, and it doesn't seem to be being blocked by the Items filter. Why doesn't searching for "alchemist" work?
Weirdly, the search function in the mobile app is pretty darn good, just as long as you know the name - or at least part of the name - of what you're searching for (as Ghost clearly does in this case).
You can't necessarily search out "ninth level spell with seven different effects" (that's what Google is for in this case), but you can specify that it's a Spell and then type everything from "pris" to "wall," and you'll hit Prismatic Wall. Likewise, by specifying Equipment and then typing "alch," the app hits exactly what Ghost wanted.
The search function for the app was coded fairly recently, the one for the website hasn’t really been updated since the site launched years ago. It’s always been jank, especially so when it comes to apostrophes (like in Alchemist’s). They continue to put development into the app it seems, but the website seems to be largely neglected at this point.
Which is really unfortunate, since the app still can't do a lot of things the website can. You still can't even create or edit a character on the app; it just opens a web page. Plus, if the website doesn't support a certain option (which is something that seems to be more and more common with every subsequent release), the app cannot support it either. The search in the app is great, but even if you find something you like in the app you often can't actually do anything with it there; rather you instead need to log into the increasingly-janky website.
If they wanted to transition away from the website to the app, I'd be okay with that - but in that case they need a fully functional app. As it stands, they've got two interdependent platforms and neither really works well these days.

The search function around here is notoriously 💩.
