A friend of mine just had his account apparently become not valid due to lapse in payment, but he just paid for a yearly subscription four months ago.

Any idea what happened or how to fix it?

Your friend will have to contact customer support regarding payment issues. I would exercise patience, though, as they are quite busy right now.
