I think I just found a small bug within character creation.
My cleric with +3 con came out at level 1 with 15 hit points and everyone jokingly accused me of cheating cos the cleric has a d8 hit die and I couldn't explain why it was 15 HP not 11.
I looked into it and it looks like if you set the Hit point Type as manual when initially setting up, it uses 12 as the rolled HP for level one.
I assume it's because at this point in the creation process you haven't selected a class yet, so it's defaulting to the Barbarian hit die (d12) as this is first in the list of classes.
To reproduce the issue:
Create a new character
Set Hit point type to manual
Go through other steps, select cleric (or presumably any class that has less than a d12 hit die)
Your assumption about it defaulting to the Barbarian’s d12 is correct. It’s a known problem, has been for the last 7 years. Maybe they’ll get around to fixing it in the next 7, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
