exactly the title... the spell magic missile is supposed to be 3 darts dealing 1d4+1 each. your engine only see the 1d+1 and thus only rolls 1 dart when we click on it. basically reguardless of the spell level, there is always 2 missing darts !

RAW you only roll once and apply the same result for each dart, so it is rolling correctly from what I can see.
I know that some people prefer to roll damage for each dart separately, as per this thread, and you can always do that yourself by rolling damage multiple times.
reading damage rolls on PHB like jeremy said... it uses AOE damages, now i understand the point. ok its the same as a fireball... so that means scorching ray does the same... many spells that are confusing about it though.
thanks for answering.
PS: those spells then sucks badly because unlike fireball, they have much more chances of rolling low then they have rolling high. which is really a bad thing considering thatputting them higher levels should make them hit more, not have less chances of hitting more. but this my humble opinion.

Scorching ray is all individual atk rolls (only cuz it says make an atk for each ray) so it does not use the AOE rules. MM is cooky and weird in that it does use AOE, AND each missile can utilize things like evoc wizards int mod added dmg to each missle

yeah i read scorching ray later on. its really weird that magic missile does this. my guess is that at first it was supposed to be all on same target and probably was changed back to normal use later on, which leads to this. thats my best guess. in all cases, its weird that MM is like that. even in earlier editions it was all rolled. then again reading 3rd edition spell, i'm wondering... it seems to be worded exactly the same.
in all cases, its weird.

No, I think that the real, MASSIVE misunderstanding that players have with MM, is the fact that it does not require an attack roll. Barring certain exceptions, it always hits. But there are multiple instances of darts. If they didn't automatically hit, then by trend standards, it would be a 1st level version of Eldritch Blast or Scorching Ray.
i don't think you understand the confusion everyone had here... we all thought magic missile was attacking 3 times at first level. but jeremy crawford explained that it is a single roll and applyed to all the darts. the same as fireball as magic missile is an AoE spell. you don'T roll the fireball damage for each enemies. you just roll once and then apply it to everyone. the same applies to magic missile. you just roll once and apply it to all darts.
we were talking about damages not the number of attacks. it is clear that magic missile is only 1 attack. but 1 attack that hits multiple times. that is clearly written right. but we don't roll for each darts. this means if you roll 1. you then make 6 damage. and if you roll a 4, you hit for 15 ! the problem lies in the damage potential which is a real bummer since its a d4, thus easier to roll low. no bell curve. thus making the spell much less effective.
as a matter of fact i am playing in a game right now and the DM forces me to roll a single dice. and up to this point, this super usefull spell, has become just a random once in a while use when im unlucky on my other cantrip attack rolls. mind you even cantrips hits more then this now. so i can safely say this spell by the ruling itself, now seriously is depowered and useless. well not useless but have a very specific use inmind now. unlike its usefullness back then. i seriously preffer my cantrip to this spell now.

At early levels when it out-damages cantrips, it's also a guaranteed hit. So unless your target uses shield you're guaranteed to not waste a spell slot for no effect.
At higher levels each dart is still an early source of damage. So if that enemy wizard cast a concentration spell you can use a 1st level slot and cause three CON checks. (Assume the reaction isn't shield in which case get a second party member to also use MM if you can.)
Well, JC doesn't know what he's talking about. Any arguments brought up using a random tweet, is not a valid argument. I don't care who made it.
It's a spell similar to Eldritch Blast and Scorching Ray, it just doesn't have an attack roll. MM is not an AoE spell, because you don't 'choose' a target for your AoE, you chose a point, and everyone around it is affected unless stated otherwise [either by the spell excluding friendlies, or Careful Spell].
And your DM is seriously nerfing MM without any good reasons to, because he doesn't understand how it works. All JC has done, is confuse people with how MM actually works.
