If you “unassigned” it, and another player “claimed” it, then that character became the property of that other player. If they removed that character from that campaign, they just need to rejoin the campaign with it. If they deleted the character, then they will have to contact support to have the character restored to them.
There is only one possible way that happened. Someone in that campaign “claimed” that character and either left the campaign with it, or deleted it. Anyone in the campaign could have done it. Ask everyone. And know that if everyone denies it, someone is fibbing.
It was claimed by a real life friend. We played a session, everything was fine. 2 weeks later, we logged on and the character is gone.
Now, it's a real life friend, and he's not the type to hide a mistake if he made one. He insists he didn't touch that character. So I believe him.
Which raises the question... what happened to that character. Is it possible for someone at D&DBeyond to look at logs or something? Is there a support email I can contact?
Yes - right at the bottom of the page there is a link.

However, if your friend was the last user to which that character was registered, they may have to be the person to contact support since it was officially their character at the time.

I created a character, had it join my own campaign. I released it and let another player take it over.
2 weeks later, I return to my campaign and the character is gone. The player insists he didn't delete it.
Is there any kind of support I can get to see if it's possible to retrieve the character?

I checked with the player. They did not touch that character at all in the two weeks between our games.
Did someone else in the campaign claim the character?

The character is gone. I had 6 in campaign. Now I have 5.
