I don't have a subscription, I have 6 characters active that I can see but I no longer play 2 of them. How do I deactivate them so I can play other characters but not delete them? I don't see an option to do it without deleting them which isn't something I want to do.
Deleting them is the only option. What you could do is export them to PDF first to save them so you can recreate them if you wish, but in order to free up more character slots you will have to delete them. Keep in mind that not necessarily everything will export to the PDF, such as custom items and such, so you should double check it first before deleting those characters.
if you could just deactivate characters to not have them account against the limit yu might aswell not have a limit because you can just deactivate and reactivate at will

Better option, don't have a limit in the first place. Granted the subscription is only $2 a month so it's not like it's a gigantic asking price but still, why have it at all?
Hey sorry this is probably waaaay late to answer this but the only way I found you can deactivate is if you making a character in someone else’s campaign link. I’ve joined many discord groups and found that out the hard way. The fact that you're still given the option to do that in a backdoor kind of way sucks but I doubt they’ll do anything about it anytime soon

A character deactivated within a campaign still counts toward your number of characters.
