Hi I've got some issue where I want my wizard to use Chromatic Orb and for some reason couldn't. However, thinking it must've been a higher level spell, I put the Wizard's level to 20 so that it was easier to find. However, I was only allowed access to Level 1 spells and Cantrips. I thought maybe I have to find spells to add to my spellbook on the go, but found that my spell slots were limited to 2 Lv 1 Spell Slots. Just wondering what I could be doing wrong, thanks all :)
Sorry I should admit I'm both new to DnD and DnD Beyond. So why are the spells that are available, available then? Aren't they also from a sourcebook? And ok I'll give the refreshing page a try.
Basically everything that is free was allowed to be free by Wizards of the Coast (the game's owner/publisher). That way everybody that wants to try their game can, but they have to spend money to get more options. It is a business after all.
Wizards of the Coast provides pdf documents called the Basic Rules and the SRD (System Reference Document) available for free online. They include a subset of races, classes, spells, monsters, etc. D&D Beyond has combined those two sources under the “Basic Rules” name, and those—as DxJxC has indicated—are available for free here. (Another way of saying it, everyone in the Basic Rules/SRD is in the Players Handbook; not everything in the Players Handbook is in the Basic Rules/SRD)
Ahh ok then. But back to the main question, does anyone have an explanation for what's going on with the wizard? All the other classes that have spellcasting can have higher than level 1 spells

And so can Wizard. Is your wizard level 3 or higher? Did you add level 2 or higher spells to your spellbook? Have you refreshed the page after changing levels?
We stopped answering this question, because we thought you figured it out. It works for me.
Oh right sorry I must've accidentally missed my comment after trying. Refreshing doesn't work and the issue is that I don't have access to higher than level 1 spells. I don't get higher level spell slots nor access to the spells. Yeah I fudged it by creating the character and then putting him to level 20 but i do that to learn the full capability and learn more. But I found that I didn't get higher than level 1 spell slots and therefore no higher than level 1 spells.
Please make sure that you have also set the Wizard class to level 20. When you go to the Class page in the character builder you should see a white dropdown by the Wizard class you already have, you'll want to set that to 20 to match your character level.
If this does not help with your problem, please supply a link to your character as ArwensDaughter suggests, using the URL from the address bar and not the share link.
Hey all, thanks for all the suggestions. So I decided to delete the character (after exporting the character sheet) and then recreate a new wizard with all the same selections and it seems to be working properly now. I'll just assume some bug was occurring or something. Anyways thank you very much for all your help

When you've increased the level of your wizard character, you may need to manually refresh the page so that all of the spell levels correctly appear.
Chromatic Orb is from the Player's Handbook, so you will need access to that sourcebook on D&D Beyond for your character to select that spell.

Please post a link to your character. The actual full url, not the share link. Then a mod can take a look.

Thank you!
You need to click on "Spells" and then the "Manage Spells" button. Here you can Add Spells.
