I have a player setting up a new character to add to a campaign I'm running. There are a couple glitches related to his level and a feature.
First, on the main campaign page, the character is being shown as 6th level. However, drilling down to the character's page, it shows as 4th level (correct).
Next, the character is a Drow Half-Elf. So they get some Drow magic and this is explained on the Racial Traits tab area. As explained there, the Darkness spell should only be available once they reach 5th level. However, going to their Spell tab, the Darkness spell shows up on the list and is able to be cast.
I have some screenshots that can be provided, although I can't figure out how to upload them here.
You cannot upload the images here, you have to upload them to a hosting site like Imgur.com and then link them here.
You don’t need the screenshots at all, simply copy the URL for that character sheet and paste it into a reply in this thread so a Mod or Staffer can look into it for you. (Without that they don’t know which of the bagillians of characters on this site is the one to which you are referring.
For the level, are you using XP? Setting XP and setting levels don't always jive, so you might have the XP for level 6, but not have leveled up the character past 4. Check on the class page and see if there's a green(I think?) arrow near the character level indicator, or set your XP back down to somewhere in level 4. This might also be why Darkness is showing up.
Thanks IamSposta. I figured images were not allowed. Don't really have a convenient way to make them available, but if one of the developers or support staff needs them, I have them.
pocketmouse - we are running milestone. I assume the player had that setting correct from the initial creation. Maybe I'll check to see if this isn't some character he had from some other campaign or maybe converted from XP to milestone?
Just because a character goes up a level, their class level does not automatically increase. The system has no idea if that player intends to multiclass. For characters that are already multiclassed like that one, it likewise wouldn’t know in which of their classes they wish to invest each character level. So when a character increases in level, the player has to manually increase that character’s class level to reflect that.
What likely happened is that player accidentally made the character level too high. And decreased the class level but did not decrease the overall character level to match. That would explain the issue you are seeing with that unexpected spell as well since as far as they system is concerned that character is 6th-level, even if it only has 4 class levels.
So, at this point it looks like the disparity between the character level on the campaign page and the character sheet has resolved itself as both are now showing 4th.
However, the errant spell is still listed. Since that is a racial trait, it seems like it should connect to the overall character level and not any of the class levels.
