Artificer at 3rd level can know 4 infusions but can only infuse 2 items at any given time. The D&D Beyond character sheet mistakenly allows a 3rd level artificer to infuse an item for each infusion known which means he gets 4 infused items, which is completely incorrect.
DM's and players watch out for this because it is all too easy to think it is OK to infuse that many items when you are over in the Equipment section under infusions to just choose an item for all four known infusions in the list.
Yes, those two features currently don’t talk to each other on the character sheet. They are currently in the process of redesigning things which should hopefully fix that issue.
If you ask me, part of the problem is people think if DDB lets you do it, it must be okay and don't actually read the feature.
Here is an example: there is only 1 feat that can be taken multiple times, elemental adept. Magic initiate, spell sniper, ritual caster, and resilient can only be taken once.
Yea it's something I've said a lot before - usually in the threads of people asking if they can take the same Fighting Styles more than once - even when it specifically says so right there when you choose one that you can't. But because DNDBeyond lets people do it - they think it's ok.
"Just because DNDBeyond lets you do something - doesn't mean it's within the rules. It's up to the player and/or the DM to verify that the character is within the rules."
It's an interesting issue actually, as we get the following requests fairly often:
The character sheet is "bugged" and allows things that are outside the rules - you need to fix this.
I want to do things on my character that are outside the rules, but your character sheet forces too strict adherence to the rules - please fix this.
On one hand, people want the character sheet to only allow them to make valid choices, which for the most part it does a really good job of, but there a few places where you do need to make sure that what you are doing is ok, by reading the rule for the feature you're interacting with, because there wasn't a sensible/practical way to implement restrictions, that would also allow people the flexibility they want to ignore the rules at their table.
As always, we want to get better at what we do and part of that is ensuring that our user interface presents meaningful choices - people shouldn't accidentally select things on their character that break the rules - it should be a purposeful decisions, something that is opted into as a conscious decision and that means that there are things we need to improve.
As Adam has discussed on the dev update stream (I really recommend watching them by the way), a lot of effort is being expended in rebuilding a lot of the foundations of the character service. Once that is done, I am hopeful that it will be much easier to make changes to how we build things!
