I created a magic item that allows one to create a mount. I'm not able to share this item with the community because:

This homebrew Item has text that includes External Links
The only links in the homebrew aren't external though, they all link back to DNDbeyond using their own internal linking tags. It has two [skill] links and one [monster] link
Is this how it is supposed to work, or is there some other issue going on?
D&D Beyond classes internal links not as ones that link within D&D Beyond, but use the automatically generated tooltips. All 'normal' links (ie URLs) are considered external links.
The one thing to check is that you haven't copied and pasted text that includes an internal link. The pasting process will convert the internal links into external ones.
Yes, like Davedamon said, even copy/pasting a tooltip (internal links like Magic Missile are called “tooltips”) from something else makes them external links. If you highlight one of those look at the top of the field you will see there is a little grey button with a symbol of a chain on it. If that is darker gray than the other buttons then it is a “link” not a “tooltip.” Right next to the chain is another button with a broken chain. Click that to get rid of the link and then add the codes ([spell] or [monster]) to turn it back into a tooltip.

For example magic missile is considered an internal link whereas https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/magic-missile is considered an external link.

That's exactly what I did...
Copied the name of the monster and then pasted it between the [monster] tags. Didn't even realize it copied the original link with the text
