I'm creating a new race and it has several subraces. I have the subraces box checked I've created the subrace through the main race. but I keep getting the error that the main race can't be used because it doesn't have subraces. also, even though it is in my collection, it doesn't show up in the choices for race in the race chooser.
After you add the subclasses, you must re-save the main class to o trigger the system to recheck for compliances or it won’t work.
You can use stuff even if you don’t publish it. You never actually need to publish anything just for you to use it in your own campaigns, or campaigns in which you are a player. That gives us time to edit things prior to publishing. That’s specifically important for Races with Subraces because if you publish the Race and then have to edit it, you can’t without making a whole new version of the Race, and when you do that, you’ll lose all of your subraces. Just a heads up.
Now, I am seeing the subraces, but instead of listing underneath their parent race, they are now all spread out in the main list--the subraces are being displayed as if they are Parent Races. the link in the first post still takes you to the Parent Race. The Subraces are now listed in the details. They just don't show up in the chooser correctly. How can i get my Parent race to list with the others under it as Subraces?
I'm not interested in publishing it at this point, using it in my own campaign. I just want it to display correctly.
Homebrew races do not currently nest under a parent race the way official ones do. Maybe one day. Just like many other things that need fixes on DDB, I am hopeful that we’ll see it within a year, but we might not.
For a (believe it or not) abridged version of why click the spoiler:
I know that they have been doing a massive, systemwide overhaul of the whole website sortakinda behind the scenes for over a year now. First they overhauled the code for the character sheet and how it pulls data.
Then they very carefully separated all of the content (official and homebrew) from the generation software. (The homebrewer we use is the same as what the devs use, but we don’t have admin privileges.) They had to separate them Because before it was so intertwined that they literally could not fix the stuff people complain needs fixing because it could have made people’s homebrews go wonky and that would have crashed hundreds of thousands of character sheets. No bueno.
Then they had to do major updates to the creation software so it could do new things, and old things better. Like how they were finally able to make Spells of the Mark work, and make the Ravnica backgrounds’ Spells work better.
All of that was also necesary to implement the variant class features that will be included in Tasha’s in November. Many of us hope to see more updates to the homebrewer around then or soon after. So we may see that functionality as more updates to the homebrewer roll out, but nobody knows for sure what’s coming or when, or in what order.
In the meantime, if you name them all as “[Race], [Subrace]” then you can at least get them to group together alphabetically.

Thank you. That fixed the initial issue.
