For example, If I buy the "Compendium content only' for the PHB, would i be able to see the 'friends' spell details in the spell tab on the site or just an online version of the book to see?
In terms of your question about the friends spell, you would be able to see its name in the listing under the spells tab, but you wouldn't be able to see any specifics about it. You would see the entire description in the appropriate spot of the "book" when looking under the compendium tab.
So if you buy the book you get a hard copy character sheets and all but with the compendium you get the digital copy? you still get access to the thing in said book like the subclasses equipment and spell right? You'd just have to go through the digital copy to find all the info on a spell or piece of equipment?

If you buy just the compendium here, you still get access to the content of the bug: you can see the subclass writeups, the spell descriptions, equipment lists, etc; they appear much like they would in a physical book. It doesn't look like the compendium version of the PHB includes an blank character sheet, but blank character sheet pdfs are downloadble from WOTC, so that's not a big problem. The different between the compendium and the "whole" book here is that the content like spells, subclasses, races, etc. Will show up only in the compendium if you purchase compendium only. If you purchase the "whole" book, you get access to those spells, races, feats, subclasses, etc. in the character builder. SImilarly with monster books, the "full" book gives you the monsters in the monster listings, the encounter builder, etc;, while a "compendium only" purchase of the Monster Manual (or Volos, Or Mordekainen's) only gets you the text of the book (and art), not access to the content in other tools here.
Alright thanks for clearing that up man that helps a lot and saves me from wasting money on the compendium not that buying it is a waste I just want access to everything
Ok I'm being dumb and over thinking things if I buy the compendium content only for say Xanathar's will I be able to use things like the samurai subclass and the spells

Here's the Basic Rules compendium, so you can see what it looks like.
The PHB would look similar, but would have all of the PHB content in it.
What buying the compendium does NOT do is allow you to do is:

not in the character builder, no. you have to either buy the "whole book" here or buy the subclasses and spells you want for that.
