I have been playing a campaign with friends for a long time now and for the last bit I am running the game now instead of my friend.

When we set it up, I owned all the material and my friend had the DM role in the campaign on the DDB page. I enabled content sharing.

Now I want to make it so I am the DM instead of him so I can change peoples HP etc. How do I do that safely without messing up any of the characters?

There is not currently a quick-fix way to switch DMs.

However, you can create a new campaign yourself (where you are the DM) and turn on sharing there, and each player can remove their character from the previous campaign, and add it to the new campaign. All of the shared material or homebrew those players are benefitting from will not be negatively affected by this, unless they try to make changes/level up/etc. while they are moving the character.

In future, whatever they add/fix something like that they almost always announce it in multiple ways, including popping into threads like this and mentioning that it was done. Basically, if they had actually changed something like this you likely won’t have to wonder about it. (Unless you stop using this Wendy for several months in a row, then you might have cause to wonder.)
