Just wondering if anyone has thoughts about which subclass is more interesting and/or fun? For lack of a better term. I am going to be playing an artificer in an upcoming game and am seeking ideas.
My character is a halfling named Grevious Bodily Harm. So I am not sure which sub to go with.
Given the character name, probably Artillerist if you want to fight at range and Battle Smith if you like melee. Armorer is also great at melee and then you don't have the hassle of a pet or extra item. As a Battle Smith you could ride your steel defender if you like.
As an armorer, you make a pretty amazing spellcasting tank.
I think they're all fun honestly. With a 2025 character, I'm choosing the Sage background to get the extra two cantrips and first level spell from Magic Initiate which really pairs well with the rest of the build, especially the less martial subclasses (Alchemist, Artillerist, Cartographer). What I love most about Artificer is how flexible it is and how versatile it is in play.
Thanks for the imput. I had not thought deeply about a background but Sage sounds good now. I am rolling him up this evening with our session 0 group, so we'll see how this goes.
Armorer if you want to tank. Ac in the range of 20 and up after a few levels.
Best dpr is probably artilerist. They are also the only subclass to get fireball. And at level 10, the spell storing device can cast a level 3 artificer spell 10 times per long rest. Thats 80d6 aoe dmg.
Craziest support is provably cartographer. You can teleport your party around. They can teleport out of danger if they hit 0hp. Everyone gets a basic mauraders map so every party member knows where the rest of the party is.
I dont know what wotc cant figure out about alchemist, but they are still way under powered. Still have to roll random for your first potion? Its just so depressing.
Oh, something to be careful of, you are going to be hauling gadgets and gear and all sorts of stuff. And if you go armorer, you ignore strength requirements for wearing thr armor, but the weight of the armor still counts towards your Carry Capacity.
2024 rules dont use encumbramce
Your carry capacity is str×15, amd you simply cant carry more than that. And if you go armorer, and want to tank, youre looking at plate, and plate weighs 65 poumds. And if your str is dumped to 8, you can only carry 120, so plate uses up half yoir carry and you only have 60 pounds left. So plan on either bumping your str to 12 or so OR make sure one of your infusions is a bag of holding until you can get a bastion, smithy facility, and the money and time to craft mithril plate.
Using newest ruleset from Eberron. 5e, etc.

Are you new to the class? and how well versed are you on the catalog of magic items on DDB?
Not new to class..Just hunting opinions. I am fairly well versed in all things dnd. Don't care about magic items.
Perhaps I should have clarified. Using the newest rulesets for artificers - what do folks think of the subclasses? I am looking for ideas for a build.
Armorer is always fun to kick some serious ass in an iron man suit.
Artillerist is fun because guns in fantasy settings.
My personal favorite is battlesmith because it's just fun to roleplay a giant robot following you around.
