I'm looking to build a Battle Smith specialising in crossbows. As a replicated magic item I can make a repeating crossbow, which both acts as a spell focus and a +1 magical weapon.
RAW material requirements for True Strike say the weapon must have a cost of least 1cp. Because the replicated item has a cost of 0, in Beyond I'm unable to use true strike on that weapon.
Is this intentional, or is this something that needs reviewing now that EFotA has released?
My DM hasn't much experience of artificers in 2024 ruleset so I want to have options before we discuss it further, rather than us making a HB rule which makes this completely OP if its intended you can't.
Repeating Shot weapons are uncommon magic items added in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer. Uncommon magic items have a cost of 200 GP on the Magic Item Crafting Time and Cost table in the new DMG. Just because you can create it for 0 GP doesn't mean it doesn't have a cost.
It may be useful to point out that True Strike doesn't actually say the weapon "must have a cost of at least 1 cp". It says the weapon has to be "worth 1+ CP".
That is, the requirement is not about what you may or may not have paid for the weapon; it's about what the weapon is worth. As AndredSkratch pointed out, what magic items are worth is well-defined in the rules and they are all worth more than 1 cp.
Ah okay. Thankyou for that distinction. It sounds like the Beyond logic might need to be updated to allow this in line with the rules.
Bug report?
D&D Beyond doesn't have any built-in support for True Strike attacks at all, let alone enforcing which weapons you can use it with. You may be looking at something from a third-party browser extension like Beyond 20, in which case you'd need to take it up with whoever made the extension.
That's just telling you how much extra damage it does due to the level 5 cantrip upgrade.
You're right that it should show it on the repeating shot weapon, but I don't think the reason it doesn't has anything to do with the cost of the weapon; it's probably just that it was neglected when that item was added with the new release.
Just as an aside, as a Battle Smith you will likely get better results from just making normal attacks with your crossbow than with using True Strike, especially once you reach level 5 and make two attacks with the same action. You only get one with True Strike, and even with the extra d6 from the level 5 cantrip upgrade, that's still significantly less potential damage than two attacks with a d10 weapon that both add your Intelligence modifier.
Thanks - yeah the character is being rolled as a Lvl 6 character (5 levels Artificer/1 level fighter to get the "Archery" fighting style). Going for a Van Helsing inspired vampire hunter, so having the option for the Extra Radiant damage was more for RP purposes, against undead & vampires. Agreed that I'll probably spend 90% of the time using the two attacks "normally".
