Just wondering if anyone has thoughts about which subclass is more interesting and/or fun? For lack of a better term. I am going to be playing an artificer in an upcoming game and am seeking ideas.
My character is a halfling named Grevious Bodily Harm. So I am not sure which sub to go with.
Given the character name, probably Artillerist if you want to fight at range and Battle Smith if you like melee. Armorer is also great at melee and then you don't have the hassle of a pet or extra item. As a Battle Smith you could ride your steel defender if you like.
As an armorer, you make a pretty amazing spellcasting tank.
I think they're all fun honestly. With a 2025 character, I'm choosing the Sage background to get the extra two cantrips and first level spell from Magic Initiate which really pairs well with the rest of the build, especially the less martial subclasses (Alchemist, Artillerist, Cartographer). What I love most about Artificer is how flexible it is and how versatile it is in play.
Thanks for the imput. I had not thought deeply about a background but Sage sounds good now. I am rolling him up this evening with our session 0 group, so we'll see how this goes.

Are you new to the class? and how well versed are you on the catalog of magic items on DDB?
Not new to class..Just hunting opinions. I am fairly well versed in all things dnd. Don't care about magic items.
Perhaps I should have clarified. Using the newest rulesets for artificers - what do folks think of the subclasses? I am looking for ideas for a build.
Armorer is always fun to kick some serious ass in an iron man suit.
Artillerist is fun because guns in fantasy settings.
My personal favorite is battlesmith because it's just fun to roleplay a giant robot following you around.
