Hunter's mark would be for battlesmith. It only works with weapon attack and generally artilirist won't be usign a weapon I think.
Could do hex though. and say its a targetting system
While I agree with the bit about the weapon attack, hunter's mark feels like more of a targeting system than hex does. Though hex would still work quite well. I feel like artillerist also works well with a crossbow (assuming you can get your dex high enough), which would work with hunter's mark.
I do totally wish Hunter's Mark worked with any damage type, weapon or spell based. but thats because I just like its theme more than hex's theme. though hex is likely good enough.
Yeah, artilrist can-although I'm not sure its worth the relative speaking loss in damage ouput of using a light xbow instead of any of the cantrips. I've had some fun with my Artilirist using Thorn Whip + Spell Sniper, for a 60ft rope dart style fluffing. Since you can pull them up to 10ft, sometimes i would sometimes I would pull 0.
the piercer feat from the new UA works with any piercing damage you deal, not just weapons, not that it really does much for thorn whip, artificers could really use the third

well what if there was a cantrip or a few cantrips that worked exactly like booming blade or green flame blade but with an long enough range to be effective with ranged weapons? shure then hunter's mark would not nearly scale as well as it does with the folks with extra attack but at least we could have something? something akin to this maybe?

As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make an attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell’s range, otherwise the spell fails. On a hit, the target suffers the attacks normal effects and the attack deals an extra 1d4 cold, fire or lightning damage (your choice).
The amount of damage increases when you reach higher levels, 2d4 at 5th level, 3d4 at 11th level and 4d4 at 17th level
Would be pretty neat. Though I'd add poison. Since thats nice for Alchemists. Plus it allows the flavor of a "poisoner" which is unique. not the best damage but doesn't hurt to toss it in.
Could also go for a more unique method and make it simliar to Magic Stone, bonus action to cast it, get it for some number of attacks similiar to magic stone. Though not a terrible amount of reason to do it that way--othe than just going for a unique method.
As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon
Is the range then to apply it to another person or just a typo?

How do you expect someone to make a melee attack against someone who is over 100ft away?

Oh wait yeah that is supposed to say weapon attack not melee attack my bad, that being Said i am shure you probably could by playing some kind of ludicris multiclass thing utilizing ether Wild shape or the shapechange spell plus bugbears long limbed turning into some random monster with an decent reach while also using the fangs of the fire snake elemental disiplince and the lunging attack manuver, i donno never underestimate the power of an person dedicated to a gimmic

Artificers not having dragons breath was probably an accidental omission by WoTC. Kind of like how on Arcane Archer they accidentally omitted the use of crossbows for the class. (When the hell are they going to fix that?)
For something like that, I'd half expect to see an errata in the near future adding it if enough people complain. It just makes too much sense for them to have it. Maybe the alchemist has a flower in their lapel like the joker that squirts acid? Maybe their homonculus flies around and gives air support by spitting lightning? Or maybe they have a wand that can belch a cone of flame? It absolutely should be added in.

I agree with you on artificers needing dragon's breath, but i am pretty shure that the reason crossbows are not included is becuase it simply does not fit the aestetic they were going for, the fluff is heavily connected to elves who prefer bows over anything else, and also it shares a name and more than a few things in common with the 3.5e arcane Archer prestige class, who also could Only use shortbows and longbows and specialized in them, in other words its probably intentional rather than fluff

Dragon’s Breath was in Xanathar’s and they have a rule to only include stuff from the Big 3 in future publications so the customer doesn’t have to go buy Xanathar’s to use Eberron content. They would have had to reprint the spell in Eberron to include it and they didn’t want to.
You’re right about the crossbow, that was omitted intentionally as you pointed out.
For the most part that's true but the artificer class specifically references spells in xanathar's with * and the class does have spelled with that are only found there such as tiny servant.
Hunh. You’re right. They usually never do that. Was it reprinted in Eberron?

Thorn Whip is one of my Artificer’s go-to cantrips. That and Ray of Frost for the speed reduction.

ray o frost and thorn whipe were my go to on my artillirist too. So useful.
it really makes me wish Alchemists had ice as a damage type because they really do want those 'damage debuff" sorta cantrips too.

I would like that arcane archer to work with thrown and slings too. Would be cool. But can always ask GMs.
Dragon breath would be nice for homunculus and alchemists in general yep.
But I like the combo there due to how fun it would be for alchemists to throw magic stone with arcane archer styled Alchemists
