I just had to show off my recent character art by an amazing artist who deserves more credit! This is my Artificer that I've been rolling since the 2017 UA release. Plague Doctor, Inventor, Alchemist, Field Medic and Chronicler, Hjalmar Gunderson. I know there a lot of hate for the Alchemist subclass, but I have LOVED it every step of the way. His name in my signature is a link to his DDB page if you're interested. I AM SO HAPPY WITH THIS ART and HAD to show it off to a group of fellow Artificer enthusiasts. Its even better than I imagined him. As you can see, I was using a Fortnite skin as Hjalmar's avatar, which made me a little sick haha, now this is perfect.
Mike Faille is an amazing artist who truly cares about bringing your character to life. He back and forthed with me about the smallest details to get the look exactly right. He is worth WAY more than what he charges. Give him and his catalogue a look!
Hjalmar Gunderson, Vuman Alchemist Plague Doctor in a HB Campaign, Post Netherese Invasion Cormyr (lvl20 retired) Godfrey, Autognome Butler in Ghosts of Saltmarsh into Spelljammer Grímr Skeggisson, Goliath Rune Knight in Rime of the Frostmaiden DM of two HB campaigns set in the same world.
That's legitimately fantastic artwork in a style pitch-perfect for a Plague Doctor. One can tell a great deal about the character just from the image alone. I love that even the 'safe' side of the shield is packed to the brim with storage, and the Teddy-Owlbear is adorbs.
Magnificent work, Spikepit. Whatever I may think of the E:RLW Alchemist's mechanics, none of that holds a candle to someone playing a character they really love.
Heh...I may nominate your thread as a "Show Off Artificer Commissions" archive, mostly because I wanna show off mine now:
Jade's work on this specific one isn't as ferociously detailed as Mike's, primarily because this is early art from the start of Star's Adventures and I didn't want to deviate from the original inspiration too much, but her adaptation of art I found online for Starlight Through Driving Rain remains one of my favorite pieces. I love the colors. Spiritual successor to my own dearly missed and honorably retired 2019 UA Alchemist, but she's grown into her own since then and become a dear friend.
You can find more on Jade on her Twitter. She's a wonderful gal to work with, I've gotten several pieces from her and been quite happy with each one.
That is a fine idea Yurei! Thread no rebranded and ready for additions!
Yeah, the main thing I told Mike is he's essentially a walking utility belt who rarely attacks and mainly assists (even thought two Ithaca Shotguns, a crossbow and a knife are all visible haha). The teddy-owlbear, who's name is Thiwee 3.0 (Hjalmar has a lisp), looks cutely fierce but thats a jeweller's hammer with twelve Cure Wounds spell stored within. Even as a long term DM i've never had a more lore filled character.
Star look very cool! I let out an audible "awww cool" when I noticed the prothetic arm in the image! Shame you had to retire her. From the looks of the character sheet, you were just about to get into the nitty gritty of the 2019 Alchemist too! So explain what you meant by 'spiritual successor' to your 'retired character' and 'become a dear friend'? Is this actually the artwork of a new character that the artist is now playing? This character draws connection to Cherie Priest's style of gun slinging steampunk aesthetic in my head! Very cool!

Heh, no no, my mistake. Star, there, is the character I get to play every other Friday, a Battlesmith-with-a-pinch-of-Wizard built using the Rising rules. She was based on, and borrowed heavily from the backstory of, Ana Indyria, my previous tiefling artificer who first assembled the Flavor that Star inherited. Ana was never a cackling, barely-coherent potion-chucking lunatic like many other alchemists; she was a suave, highly confident and exceptionally capable Indiana Jones-style explorer and adventurer (thus her name, "Ana Indie" with some D&D to thinly disguise it :P).
When the Rising rules made it impossible for her to continue existing the way she used to - Ana was an expert fencer and a master marksman who fought in close coordination with her Homunculus, she just didn't work as a potion-gargling spell chucker - I ended up sorta transferring her ghost to Star as the seed of a new character. Ana rests comfortably as a level 4 2019 UA Alchemist in my character trove, but Star carries her lineage and legacy. Even if Ana would be shocked to learn she lost an arm in the transition, picked up a new side vocation as what amounts to an automail engineer, and is now pale as a newborn human babe. Paler, really.
Unseen in her current art (though maybe something I'll do the next time Jade has time for a really chonky commission) is Star's Defender, an unreasonably buff and ripped male tiefling displaying her work as a limbsmith with his absolute fist-cannon arms, named Platinum. And her own Homunculus, a super steampunk tophat with mechanical imp wings and a two-foot stinger-tipped tail affixed to the hatband alongside its jeweled heart serving as a single, creepy unblinking eye. Named Hatinum. There is the possibility of a wizard familiar later, a silvery grey-furred li'l fey cat called Catinum, but I am informed that this may be a pun too far and result in Rocks Falling, so we'll have to see. :P
Oh right! I get it now! Very cool indeed. I did consider moving over to Battlesmith, purely to maintain the homunculus. The ideal of a sterling platinum humanoid looking mech companion, an adonis at that, is great very provocative story telling and imagery, especially as a testament to her prosthetic development skills. I hadn't considered a humanoid mech comp as anything but a Doty-like construct. Platinum is a very cool idea though.

Pointed folks at my table at this thread; approval was high. Heh, according to Maker: "Two Ithaca short-barrels - clearly a man of culture." Heh, now I know what to look for when Star needs a new gun :P had not noticed until now that Hjalmar managed to scoop up a Tome of Clear Thought. Lucky him. he can shoot it through Space and Time my way now that he's done with it, ne?
Well thanks to your party! I've been lovingly cultivating this character since 2017 and over 3 machs haha
Ah yes, not only has Hjalmar touched them up with his on flair, but he reaped them from his nemesis' dead body after he took Hjalmar's one and only design for them years ago and Modify Memoried the idea out of Hjal's head (just left the knowledge it had been taken). With Repeating Shot they are brutal. But yeah, the real world equivelant are classy as heck!
And the Tome of Clear Though was a result of our DM running us through some old school Against the Giants. Hjal saw Illithid and KNEW they'd have some good stuff on em, I just didn't anticipate it would be that good. Just stoked I found it before the rogue or the war wizard did haha Its all yours though, its just taking up weight in his Bag of Holding now and was only going to put on display in his Wondrous Item and Enchanting store he'll open up when he retires, but he'd much prefer another Arty getting use from it hahaha

This is my near future Artificer Armorer - Axl Tinkertorque.
Volcanic Gnome Artificer who powers his gadgets through crystals that he has learned to harmonize with his soul. Much like how current day radio transmitters utilize crystals for frequencies etc.
His goal is to expand his knowledge and use of technology to level the playing field against those that wield magic, which Axl deems unfair and unbalanced.
That is absolutely delightful. Getting Iron Giant vibes from the battlesuit, in a good way. Heckuva cannon on the right arm; is that any particular infusion?
2. Integrated actual cannon which has a 1 use before a reload is required and it would be only reloadable on a short rest at least. Would do high damage and knockback.
3. Infusion which takes the concept of a heavy crossbow but it is infused into the gauntlet and fired pitons instead of bolts and rope can be attached to create nets / climable rope links etc.
I like the concepts of either a 1 shot big hit cannon or a minigun type multiple shots per attack but smaller damage. I guess that can be a matter of flavour.
Holy heck I love him! I can really see the relationship between gnome and exosuit in your artwork too! Also, on behalf of Artificers everywhere, thank you for not Token-Ironman-ing your concept! 😂
And flavouring your Artificer spells is totally the way to go. All those pipes on Hjalmar's right glove are for many of my different spells, as well as each of the pots, bottles and pouches.

I have a railgun / cannon infusion concept or 2.
1. My Firebolt Cantrip could just come from it.
4. Ball-bearing Firing Arm Cannon. 2d4+Int Piercing Damage. Bypasses Piercing Resistances perhaps.
I like the concepts of either a 1 shot big hit cannon or a minigun type multiple shots per attack but smaller damage. I guess that can be a matter of flavour.
Sounds like a great start. Drop by sometime and let us know how he works out in play.

Does it have to be commissioned artwork, or can you post a picture of your artificer if you made it yourself? :P

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
Man, it is gonna take a while to get used to the color editor interface on that program. I cannot get fur to come out right short of using a preset.
Heh, that one's very Buck Rogers. Artillerist? The Space Pistol's pretty great, not gonna lie.
