We allowed a kraken to kill off most of a goblin clan before dealing the killing blow to both. While gathering our spoils, I took a couple of kraken teeth. The dwarves we were working for are masters of many trades and one was able to fashion a lute out of one of the kraken's teeth and had it encase in mythril. It's now a battle lute.
This thing will be terrible to tune but it should never break.
Just some flavor... The Teorbo is a great instrument for a classic D&D game. When the instrument first came to England in the 17th century, it was destroyed upon suspicion of being a weapon of war.
My bard uses a hammered dulcimer that he carries on his back (with straps, kinda like a backpack). It has legs, so when he breaks it out (for either combat or performance) he stands it up like a keyboard.
Had a cowboy sort of bard who carried a lute with him, of course, but he also had two kalimbas strapped to his sides like holsters...he'd play them while casting spells instead of gunslinging.
Oh boy, I havent done anything too crazy myself, but have some friends that have pulled some crazy things, like:
The worlds smallest violin
A Kazoo I don't think this needs an explanation
A Piano They put the piano on a mount (dont remember what exactly), counting it as an exotic saddle, and then just instructed their mount to move about..... yeah
After a fight with a hoard of skeletons i had my tabaxi bard cobble together a makeshift xylophone out of skulls and femurs. Managed a decent recital of "under the sea" if i dare say so, myself.
Being a parrot looking aarakocra, maracas and a tambourine seemed the best picks. Since they involve more shaking of tail feathers and flashy use of wing-arms.
I'm really tempted to ask the dm if my Tiefling Bard can have a Bass Clarinet so I can bring my own Bass Clarinet to the sessions and play Flamingo whenever possible
I gave my Bard/Fighter an instrument that fits his military background and role as an officer commanding other soldiers in battle. I chose a brass "samba whistle" (which is capable of making three tones), which he carries on a chain around his neck. A normal whistle did not sound enough like a musical instrument to me, three different tones allow at least different harmonies to be played for different spells. For normal performances, he can still play the flute, horn and drums.

My bard is also proficient with the Kazoo lmao

Here is an example of the instrument in use.
and a second with some insight
I'm looking for a game to play a Dwarven bard, he'd use Dwarven bells as his instrument, a set of mini-anvils, like a marimba or glockenspiel.
For my attack I will throw my spear...two handed...for 1d8...

Waiting on an ebberron game to be warforged bard with built in pipe organ.
I decided on Bongos, Lyre, and Panpipes since I'm using Tabaxi. He made them using materials scavenged in the jungle.
I have a bard who rocks a Concertina (like the accordions in Sea of Thieves) and then can also accompany himself with a drum he plays using Mage Hand
my current bard (Yeslee) has a hot pink fiddle and bone harp that she found in the temple of a leviathan that was worshiped like a god.
If i rolled for persuasion and got a 19 would you click my link?

How about street organ with monkey
Tuba
Sitar
Maracas
Hurdy-Gurdy... if i could put forth a non standard instrument it would be that.. its way more epic than the name sounds.

I'm going with a jaw harp. Quirky and weighs nothing.

So I am just starting to read about dnd... but I have a question about this.
Could a half-elf bard get animal handling and get a pet bird (thinking crow or raven or parrot) to act as an instument?
Or a kalashtar mind link to a bird?

The npc that’s with the current party plays a lamellophone strapped to his thigh so he can play a quick riff when he needs to.
