I made a 'entrepreneurial'(pirate) bard recently and decided his pirate ship was a giant pipe organ that he played from the helm while steering, but sadly my DM has not allowed me to let him bring a grand piano into the Tomb of Annihilation. Might just ask for an accordian.

A room full of armed traps helps the dungeoneers go down! In the most delightful way!
Had hilarious player who wanted to have a dragon skull as his instrument or a full on grand piano that he would lug around to every battle. I told him he could have a grand piano but the keys were made out of dragon skull. WAS AMAZING!
Hello! I'm new to the site and D&D, and I'm trying to create a Bard. Perhaps this question should go to a site feature request thread, but before I do that I want to see if you Bards can help me.
Is there a way to create (I guess the word is "Homebrew") new "musical instruments" for me to create and that get added to the list of options of the three instruments I gain proficiency in when creating a character?
My bard is not a musical one - an Actor/Comedian - and I would like to be proficient in something that would help an actor who doesn't sing. My idea is an ancient version of the non-electronic type of megaphone, known as the Speaking Trumpet. Or even the butt-end of my Halberd, which I could just bang on the ground to create rhythm and/or noise.
Any help would be appreciated!
given that it's called a "Speaking Trumpet", price it the same as the horn.

i like linguistics and, well, d&d, obviously. this bio hadn't been updated for 3 years so i figured i'd do that.
I haven't made a bard yet, but I'm dying to make a dwarven bard with bagpipes for my next campaign based around this mini I just finished painting. That said, I don't think that bagpipes are that weird, especially in battle!
I love the guys' conviction when he hits the room! How have I not seen this before? Thank you.
My lute is from a Kraken's tooth and inlaid with mithral. My DM says that if it's used one-handed, it's a shield. Two-handed, its a greatclub. And with the two separate +1 enchantments, it's a shield +1 and greatclub +1.
I keep joking that some day I want to play a bard with an otamatone for an instrument. Specifically a Whisper bard who interrogates people with ominous meep beeps.
I am actually about to start my first D&D game and will be playing a bard. I did not want to do lute, so I decided on a Shamisen (Japanese 3 string guitar), mostly because I am absolutely in love with it's voice.
Singing saws: You have to be sitting to work these, so not really a combat instrument.
Rhythm sticks: kinda boring actually, but not something you see everyday.
Whipping airpole: Ever since I saw the Blue Man Group use these in a performance, I've wanted a Monk/Bard having this as a martial arts-type weapon/instrument.
Double contrabass flute: Flutes can get rather large...
Nyckelharpa: You know how saxophones and the like have keys so you can have more holes on an instrument than fingers to stopper them? This applies the same logic to viol-type string instruments.
Wheelharp: Take the above and make a piano out of it.
Hydrolauphone: Not exactly portable, but would be entertaining to see a bard try to make sense of it.
Pyrophone: A pipe organ that is powered by combustion and only works if it is on fire... Yes, it's real, and it's very metal.
Zeusaphone: A tuned tesla coil. Needs magic to work in a fantasy setting, but still fun.
Lyre/Lute Crossbow that wields not only my magic, but pre-loads multiple crossbow bolts. Think Kung Fu Hustle when those blind Kung fu masters wield that epic, magical blade firing Koto!
I aim to use it with Crossbow Expert and maybe Sharpshooter feats and something else that makes me a good tinkerer.
I’m new to D&D and so is my DM, so as I get another few levels, what I’m thinking is I employ an NPC tinker or develop my skills to create a musical string instrument that also loads and fires crossbow bolts in rapid succession each turn before being reloaded. It also can cast my spells. Too much???

Anybody try making their instruments out of dead bodies to be like the Vampire Band guys in the movie FromDusk till Dawn?

Thats.... really clever, I like it
Concertina playing Forest Gnome Bard
Still playing with my bard. I eventually just want to change my Pipes of Haunting into a Cowbell of Haunting.

My Dwarf bard is also a tinkerer. As a Lore Bard he is more a storyteller, but his instrument is a self-made music box.

Hombrew: Way of Wresting, Circle of Sacrifice
I've had a mute bard mime who played theramin.

1. Spoons
2. Jug flute
3. Farts
4. Live puppies that you pinch/bite/etc to make yelp to a beat (evil bards only)
These are all technically real 'instruments':
Singing saws: You have to be sitting to work these, so not really a combat instrument.
Rhythm sticks: kinda boring actually, but not something you see everyday.

Currently have a bard-warlock that has a Voodoo patron. He plays the Xylabones.
This is the stuff.
Could just go with the Thigh Slap too.
Looking for new subclasses, spells, magic items, feats, and races? Opinions welcome :)
I just gained proficiency with tinkerer's tools. I am definitely going to use some of these ideas!
Just here to do things...
