My Bard is Xavier Windswallow - a half elven bard of the College of Lore. I think I love the versatility of Bards, and I'm really happy with the way my character has kind of naturally evolved in a way that stays true to his personality and background.
When I first created him I envisioned him as a support character - standing in the back, inspiring and healing his friends and generally trying to avoid direct melee combat. His goal was to bear witness to heroics and then sing the songs and tell the tales of the heroes involved. But then few things happened. First the nature of our party (and players) was such that he was forced to take more of a leadership role and found it necessary to be on the front lines. While this was not the original intention, Xavier found that he rather enjoyed being the hero himself and he decided that rather than just tell the tales of others, he wanted to BE the hero in his stories, and what's more, he wanted OTHER bards to tell the tales of Xavier Windswallow. After a near-death experience at the bony hands of some skeletons, he learned defensive dueling, and later, after getting severely pummeled by some animated furniture, he decided that he had better put some more offense into his spell casting. Spending time in the library of Candlekeep gave him the time and resources to learn some new spells along with improving himsel in other ways (better health, improved spellcasting ability). He was amused by the similarities between the Thunderclap Cantrip, Thunderwave and Shatter - so he learned all 3 and began introducing himself as "Xavier Windswallow, Thunderbard."
