Valor is practically 70% of the time a ranged character.. 2 bow attacks (attacks in general), buff people’s ac from a distance, shoot your bow then cast
Yeah i would argue only one bard subclass puts you in melee and that is Blades, Valor can do decently with your average melee character but ALL of the rest are more attuned to standing back and letting someone else take care of the heavy hitting.

A cross bow valor bard is a fun way to play a ranged bard. Another bard that I had in my party once was a hand-crossbow lore bard who used their spells to enhance their ability. There are ways to do ranged bard, but there isn't much of a "use bardic inspiration to increase YOUR damage on ranged attacks" feature.

Whisper Bards can add psychic damage to ranged weapon attacks. I’m debating taking crossbow master so mine can duel-wield with a hand crossbow and get that extra damage.
It is like "pyshic blades", the feature is pretty well balanced regardless of the weapon and the name just suggest an iconic scenario (a swashbuckling hero with a sword), but really I don't really see it as an exploit or a RAW vs RAI scenario from any point of view. I'd say it is a totally legit reflavour.

College of Swords allows you to do blade flourishes with "weapon attacks", i.e., includes ranged weapon attacks.
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.
Just checked... it'd work... but at least to me it feels like a rules as written vs rules as intended situation there.
