I have an idea for a Tiefling bard who uses Thaumaturgy, prestidigitation and other cantrips/spells to be a one man metal concert. I thought it would be funny to have his battle axe also be his instrument and magic focus, but I think I’m more interested in turning the terrain/surrounding into the most epic light show on the planet while he rocks out through encounters.
my question is, which would work better for that purpose: Multi-classing into sorcerer or warlock? I keep jumping back and forth on that.
I’m looking specifically at fiend warlock for Dark One’s Luck, or Divine Soul sorcerer for cleric spells.
Look at the warlock invocations and decide if any of those mesh with your idea. They would be the best reason to go warlock. For more spell versatility sorcerer is more appropriate.
Mask of many faces for appearance quick changes and Misty Visions for Silent image at will could be good stand ins for band members.

"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
Besides giving you the sought-after Thaumaturgy cantrip (which bards should seriously have), the idea that you could literally have a god-like bloodline of rock and roll has a certain flair...maybe a deity of magic or a trickster god. "Favor of the Gods" is incredibly useful, too.
Plus, you get both sorcerer and cleric spells...and nothing says "light show" like Chromatic Orb, Chaos Bolt, Guiding Bolt, or Magic Missile. ; )

Warlock gives you two spell slots till 11th level in the class. Sorcerer gives you that at level 1 in the class. Easy maths.

Divine Soul seems more appropriate here.
