So, the most recent Unearthed Arcana announced that they were dropping the Onomancer wizard subclass, and possibly exploring that theme in an different class's subclass. I immediately started thinking of the potential classes that an Onomancer would fit into. I think that the Bard is the best one to have True Naming magic if not the wizard. What are your thoughts? What abilities would it have? I have some ideas, but would love to hear yours.

I would say that the final feature should be similar to the whispers bard. But for really powerful things, like fiends, primordials, dragons and fey. Maybe be able to bind them to you? They can't attack for you unless they normally would. Lasts for up to a day?
Bard Onomancer would be a really fun subclass to play. Bards only have 3 levels of subclass features, though, so there wouldn't be a lot of features. Maybe it could be some kind of charm effect, because that seems like a bard thing to do. Maybe some feature that would give a creature disadvantage on saves against certain types of spells (maybe enchantment?).

well i already had the idea that you could use the bard class to represent a truenamer and give em most of the spells like healing word and such, reflavouring vicious mockery and bardic inspiration as truename magic and later at 14th level picking up divine word for some extra spicy stuff. Lesser and greater restoration can be the bard using a true name to "remind" the universe of what an creature or object is supposed to be like, planar binding fits the theme nicely and so does the bane spell. The collage of elequence could work really nicely to represent this kind of bard, as could the collage of lore

i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes
Strangely, I found the "Onomancer" to be a little too limiting, from a roleplaying perspective...the mechanics I very much enjoy, but the whole process of extracting a targets true name I found to really specific to a certain kind of character.
I love the concept of a bard that can utter some ancient phrase, or a passage from a legendary story, and use the echoes of that phrase to conjure magical effects...I mentioned this in another forum relating to the end of the "Onomancy" wizard, but should the bard receive a new subclass, I'd much rather it be something along these lines.
Akin to the Dovahkiin from "Skyrim", using Shouts from the ancient language of dragons...except with the flexibility to learn them from ANY ancient race...celestial, infernal, giant, etc...
Or even similar to Chanters from "Pillars of Eternity", who recite song & story and literally conjure the spectral echoes of these tales to aid on the battlefield.
As BramblefootDruid stated, calling this a "College of Echoes" or "College of Resonants" would be entirely appropriate to a Bard subclass, and one I would be eager to play!

Do the Bard spells support this subclass?
Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscript catapultas habebunt
I think so. Charming creatures is essential to learning their true name, and magical secrets lets you get those nice summon and bind spells.
When the DM smiles, it is already to late.
Charming does seem thematically like it would work, but in that case, Glamour bards would be mechanically close to it.

Might be too close to the Echo Knight.
