Hi I am going to be part of a Call of the Netherdeep campaign once it is released. The DM has given the ok on any and all Critrole content and the party is going to be all clerics for reasons I'm not entirely sure of, but that's it's own thread.
I intend to play something of an edgy blasty boy and I am currently picking between these two domains, another option is Tempest but that's just a bit less edgy.
Well, the blood cleric is not currently available on Dndebyond as official or officially licensed homebrew content, so if you don't have a homebrew version you can use or the time to make it from the Tal'dorei Campaign Setting Reborn book, that is off the table.
If you are looking for big hit, Tempest is my choice over Death. As cool as the Increase Necro damage and the ability to target 2 creatures with a single cantrip is, usually tempests ability to make guys who hit you take damage, deal extra damage, and force yourself to deal maximum damage are better for the big numbers.
Both are good choices for an edgy blasty boy. I'd say Death is blastier especiallyagainst single targets, but Blood would do better AOE damage and have more utility.
I guess it depends how important the blasting part is; twin target cantrips on Death can be a big increase in damage if your DM gives you a decent mix of enemies to fight, but will be underwhelming if you face a lot of single targets (unless you DM lets you hit big targets twice, but that's not RAW). In the right conditions this probably makes it the more "blasty" of the two since you don't need to spend a single spell slot to benefit. It has a pretty good spell list, but if you can pick up Hex, e.g- with Magic Initiate (Warlock), then you can build a nasty, nasty character with it.
Blood Domain adds damage to your full spells (not cantrips iirc) so you need to burn at least some slots to benefit, but this will work against single targets without any houseruling required, and you'll be doing more damage overall when you're burning slots (which you want to do at later levels anyway, at least in important fights). It's got a really nice mix of spells in its added list, and has more general utility features so I think it's probably a better all-rounder, while still being a good blaster.
And also I now want to play Death domain again and also create a Blood domain character.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
