My first time playing a cleric in 5E (not a lot of 5E experience) and I just took a life cleric Beyond pregen and had to take the stat boost in str at l4 to wear heavy armor. I’ve kinda fallen into the tank role now by l6 because no one else can do it well except our circle of the moon Druid. Using spirit guardians a lot and thinking about concentration checks.
it looks like resilience con will be better than warcaster by the numbers for improving concentration checking, but I’m also looking at Lucky. I’m additionally wanting to put two more stat increases (four more points) into wisdom and it would be better to do that sooner rather than later. So I’m feeling torn.
Any advice what to take at l8? Am I overlooking any magic items or other feats that should be on my radar?
It really depends what your stats look like right now and what sort of playstyle you have. 16 Wisdom is perfectly fine if you are mainly using spells like Spirit Guardians for damage so you can probably delay raising Wisdom a little bit. Resilient CON is a very good pick especially if you have a odd number CON stat right now. Another tip is to take the Dodge Action instead of attacking because keeping your Spirit Guardians spell up should do plenty more than your single weapon attack especially if you can get multiple enemies under its area of effect.
As for items since you are in the tank role you should probably be on the lookout for things that raise your AC like a Ring of Protection.
If your constitution is odd, then resilient Con is the better choice over warcaster.
As for your wisdom. One of the great things about spirit guardians is that it does half damage on a success this means it continues to pour in damage even with a low wisdom. It is arguably better to keep your wisdom at 16 and spend your ASI's maintaining concentration with both resilient con/warcaster. If you stay on the front line with spirit guardians and don't switch up your play style you are fine with a 16 wis. The real trouble comes if you start moving into things like banishment which are true save for nothing spells.
As for magic items: Necklace of prayer beads, and if you want to improve the DC of your saves an amulet of the devout.
Do you enforce componeny rulles? If you do, that’s where warcaster can really shine. Otherwise, as others said if you have an odd con score, resilient is a good choice.
Sentinel feat works nicely with spirit guardians -- they can't leave its range unless you move away from them. But it's not as big a priority as any of the things you've mentioned.
Thanks all. Con is even 16 already. Our Druid tank is taking sentinel next. Currently at 57hp and 23 AC. Great suggestion to take the dodge action. I did not think of that. Don’t think I’ve seen anyone ever use it.
