I also advise you to discuss spell selection with your mates. A handy spell like Counterspell might be good for more than one player to have access to, but I try not to overlap spells much. In my party I play a Lore Bard and another player is playing a War Cleric. I do more healing than the Cleric. Now that we are higher level I often use Cutting Words to prevent me from needing to heal other PCs.
I have Bane and our Cleric has Bless. These basically are the mirror of each other.
I have Healing Word (a bonus action spell) and a bonus for short rests to give extra HP. The Cleric has Cure Wounds, but rarely uses it. She can do more with a first level spell dishing out damage.
Our Cleric has picked up Enhance Ability. I love that spell! Guidance cantrip is awesome too. Guidance would be on my cantrip list if I play a Cleric, just like Vicious Mockery is going to be on my Bard's cantrip list.
Anyway, I think it is important for the spell casters to discuss their spells so they can work together. Good luck.

You should make a Gnome Cleric ( Light Domain ) with only a lantern ( if you run out of Light spells ). Then buy a pair of wands of Light, or if you travel only in the evenings and nights, then use those in advantage of taking a clear view about what's in your vaccinity.
The only problem is................ you'll be easily spotted by random raiders, or mobs. Darkvision gionna grants you a safe point of view, from being easily spotted. Don't forget Light can cause Blinded.
Ok well all that stuff is good sure, and I may be a bit new to the dnd scene, but I have discovered a spell that is very very powerful if you use it right. the spell called inflict wounds. its a level 1 spell that deals 3d10 necrotic damage. now that may not be the best, but if you use it at a higher spell slot it starts hitting really hard.
Cause wounds isn’t so great in practice. It’s a touch spell, you you have to be in melee to use it. And if you miss, you’ve lost the spell slot. Better to save the slot for healing.Of you hit, it’s great but the cleric isn’t there to do melee damage, that’s someone else’s job
Its similar to why bless is better than bane. Buffing/healing always hits. Maybe safer is a better word than better, as I think of it.

Wait until you find out about the Fireball spell that Light Clerics get at 5th level.
If ravnica background are permitted, I like taking rakdos cultist so I can get...a lot of great spells, but firebolt is added to my cantrip list so I can have an attack cantrip, save cantrip, light and guidance.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Light Domain Clerics are always needed in every Campaign. And mostly if they are Masters of the communication with their GODS/GODDESSES. The best part is, if they get Medium armor and stays in the central spot from the party's setup, it's a " very well done, Mr./Mrs. healer ".
I suggest to not risk too much this character, or else the party gonna be screwed, so easily. Just take some Radiant damge spells or Necrotical ( if it's the case ), and the rest it's fine. Getting spells to do any other magic damage than those, it's not a MUST HAVE, don't waste the effort.
Get Guiding Bolt as an attack spell. Does 4d6 radiant damage, and if it hits, it gives you and your allies advantage against the enemy you hit.

Wait until he learns about a level 5 Celestial Sorc multiclassing with a level 2 fighter and using action surge to cast inflict wounds twice with a 3rd level spell slot, doing 10 d10 damage to a single target.

My experience with guiding bolt is very poor. It seems to /always/ miss. I never take it on my clerics any more, I have more useful things to do with my spell slots.

Well.... I min/maxed my cleric, so it always hits for me.... Also, the one I am playing is nothing more than a combat cleric, only for a boss battle one-shot.

I min max mine as well, I value hitting over all. I assure you, it's quite possible to roll low and miss consistently.

Agreed. My 20 wis cleric never seemed to hit with guiding bolt. And my current party’s 18 wis cleric doesn’t either.
I've just got to the point I never prepare it anymore, it's a wasted spell slot waiting to happen.

well clerics are mainly used for the healing, but that doesn't mean they are not good for combat.
Yes, you are a bit new. Clerics are not mainly used for healing. Especially the Light Cleric and Tempest Cleric.
Wait until you find out about the Fireball spell that Light Clerics get at 5th level.
And all Clerics get Spiritual Weapon and Spirit Guardians at 3rd and 5th levels respectively.
I play a Light Cleric and I went with:
I like the flexibility of taking both Sacred Flame and Toll of the Dead to target low saves (Dex or Wis) or bypass resistances (Necrotic vs Radiant).
I would also recommend taking the Healers Feat. It allows healing without burning spell slots.
If ravnica background are permitted, I like taking rakdos cultist so I can get...a lot of great spells, but firebolt is added to my cantrip list so I can have an attack cantrip, save cantrip, light and guidance.

Tell the rogue/weaponmaster/barbarian to hold their action for after you cast guiding bolt - guarantee that your heavy hitter is the next attack!
Rogue can do that.
A weaponmaster or Barbarian should just attack twice on their turn instead of using their action to attack once with advantage on your turn.
