In what sense? While they're both full casters they have very different purposes.
Sorcerers have a higher base line damage output with cantrips, and being Charisma based they are better at social interactions. But they have d6 hitpoints, and are rather delicate.
Druids have a lower baseline output via cantrips, but are capable of powerful healing. Being wisdom based they are great at perception and insight. With d8 hitdice, and temp HP gifted to them wild shape, Druids have great survival.
They have different ideal situations than one another.
Sorcerers have a higher base line damage output with cantrips...
Minor nitpick: that's only true of Draconic Sorcerers at levels 6+, with cantrips that match their draconic ancestry. In my opinion the distinguishing feature of sorcerers is Metamagic, not their cantrip damage.
I agree with InquisitiveCoder. Sorcerers are powerful because they can customize the way they cast their small pool of spells, making them extremely focused on doing one thing extremely well. Druids have likely the highest survivability of any core caster, and they have versatility that Sorcerers don't have, letting them be great healers, great with utility, great with exploration, and they can be great in melee, with the right wildshape. Both are vastly different, and it would be impossible to say one is better than the other unless you're being more specific, such as saying "Druids have better survivability than Sorcerers" or "Sorcerers are more likely to have a higher overall damage output than Druids".
You might advise someone to pick a Monk or Rogue if they wanted mobility over picking a Fighter or Paladin, but there's no real direct comparison of 'monk is better than fighter' or 'rogue is better than paladin' without specifying exactly what metrics you care about.

You know what thats very true. Ive only had experience with Draconic Sorcerers and Phoenix Sorcerers which can have some nice burst damage, so my baseline for there damage output was skewed.
He says sorcerers are the best at everything like spells melee attacks and all the others
That confirms my suspicion that he is saying "sorcerers are the best" and meaning it as synonymous with "sorcerers are my favorite" rather than making a claim that is supported by evidence and shows sorcerers to mechanical outperform all other character options in a wide variety of situations.
What is the conversation here? Are Sorcerers better than Druids? The answer is no, unless you have some specific comparisons you wanted to bring to attention.
Ask him how many wild shapes a sorcerer can do per day. Checkmate.
I'm practically crying, all I can imagine now is two party members arguing who's better at the casting, and the druid, all "Oh yeah, well can you do this?" turns into a cat and gets ear scratches from the cute drink server in the tavern.

My mental image is the two people arguing, the druid turning into a giant toad, and then swallowing the sorcerer.
What possible reasons does he give for this assertion?
Better at what?

Sounds like your friend is saying the equivalent of "Sushi is better than pizza."
By which I mean your friend has confused "I prefer this" and "This is better" as being synonymous phrases.
