So I just became a LV14 Druid and I just got the ability to change my form with alter self and was curious If I could use this while in Wild Shape. Like, if I turn into a Fire Elemental could I then use Alter Self to look like my regular self? I know its says that you have a to "cast" it, but its also says "at will". I take that as I don't have to do any kind of V,S or M. I just think it and I change to that. Just trying to get a clearer picture of the limitations of Alter Self.
When it says "at will", it means that you do not consume spell slots. You still must provide spell components (V, S and M). You can use alter self in wildshape when you take beast spell. IN that case yes, you can change the appearance of your current form.
Alter self is a concentration spell, so what if you cast it before assuming a beast shape. You retain the concentration of your spells when you assume beast shape, so would you still be able to use your alter self while in your beast shape?
I would think that if you cast alter self first, then did a wild shape, you'd still look like the beast you changed into. However when wild-shape ends you would revert back to the alter-self shape.
According to the wording of Alter Self you can use an action to end one effect of the spell and switch to another one. So I'd say that a druid could cast Alter Self, Wild Shape, and then use Alter Self to give the Wild Shape beast form extra abilities.
ok by alter self he means "Thousand forms" which you get at lvl 14 as a moon druid and wouldn't it be slightly different than normal alter self. From my point of view, it takes inspiration from alter self but it's different due to being at will. Not needing the use of slots nor component (not to mention how long it takes or doesn't take to transform). Since it's something a moon druid can just do it and really isn't a spell. I would say that it might be possible to alter the wild shape form, like say you turn into a wolf and you want to give it a horn or wings that could be possible, but it all depends on what the dm allows and the general populous allows.
Idk I don't see a thousand forms as it gives you the spell Alter self, but more of a slight variation of Alter self that is its own thing.

It literally says you cast the Alter Self spell at will - so you literally are casting Alter Self - not some variation of it. Also - there are effects in the game which say you don't need components - Thousand Forms is not one of them - because of the lack of that statement - you do need to provide them.

Yea , I kinda figured that would be the case. Oh well. That is going to be a long ways away until I can do any of that. Thanks for the info.
